About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is seeking an Engineering Optical Coordinator to support the Supply Chain Organization within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. This role is situated in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate. The coordinator will be responsible for the specification, acquisition, fabrication oversight, source inspection, and/or metrology of various commercial and NIF-designed small and large optics, as well as ancillary glass items, optics-metrology equipment, and optics-processing hardware. The position may also involve general mechanical and/or electrical hardware. This role requires full-time on-site presence and will be filled at either the 338.1 or 339.2 level, with additional responsibilities assigned at the higher level.

Requirements

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Laser Technology, Optical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Engineering Physics; or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant training and work experience in optics.
  • Advanced skills and understanding of complex to highly complex optical materials, along with experience in optical finishing, coating, surface quality inspection, and testing methods/issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of optical metrology, including the principles, techniques, and instrumentation used to measure and evaluate optical components.
  • Advanced experience in purchasing requisitions, securing approvals, award contracts, purchasing items, and resolving procurement-related issues.
  • Advanced experience reconciling optics orders and receipts and generating nonconformance reports.
  • Ability to mentor others in specific on-the-job training, with advanced technical skills specific to assignment.
  • Advanced written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills in specific technical areas.
  • Extensive experience mentoring others in specific on-the-job training, with advanced technical skills specific to assignment, may also include administrative and technical leadership skills (at 339.2 level).
  • Highly advanced skills and understanding of relevant technologies and processes, including the ability in optical, mechanical and electronics technology theory to design complex systems and solutions to highly complex problems (at 339.2 level).
  • Highly advanced written and verbal communication, feedback, and presentation skills in multiple technical areas (at 339.2 level).

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced technical oversight and coordination support for optics orders and issuance of Work Orders.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, requestors, LLNL Procurement, production control, NIF warehouse, LLNL Receiving, and onsite optical fabrication shops to meet project cost and schedule requirements.
  • Inspect optics to verify physical dimensions and surface quality, stage, transport, and deliver parts across the LLNL site.
  • Perform precision optical metrology and testing, including interferometry and spectrophotometry, to evaluate component quality, verify compliance with technical specifications, and support production and acceptance processes.
  • Provide regular, detailed status updates and reports to supervisors and requesters, while anticipating and reconciling supply issues, including technical factors affecting critical milestones.
  • Reconcile orders and receive optics and generate nonconformance reports for items that do not meet specification requirements.
  • Initiate purchasing requisitions, secure approvals, and collaborate with Subcontract Administrators to secure award of contracts, purchase items using LLNL-issued credit card, and identify and resolve issues for successful completion as needed.
  • Travel to supplier facilities to assess production progress, provide technical support, perform source inspections of optics prior to authorizing shipment, and take other necessary actions to ensure suppliers success; prepare trip reports and follow-up on open issues.
  • Perform advanced technical assignments, including operation of the small optics warehouse and optical metrology activities, including inspection for laser damage.
  • Organize and present regular formalized data to management using Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide highly advanced technical and/or technical management support in the area of engineering technology or applied science, and conduct research to develop solutions to highly complex engineering problems (at 339.2 level).
  • Develop and refine highly complex technical tasks by applying established guidelines, reviewing technical data, and conducting research to identify and recommend substitute optical products with comparable technical specifications when required (at 339.2 level).
  • Author, review, and approve reports, operation/maintenance manuals, and other engineering related documents; routinely present material to management and peers; and plan, organize, budget, and lead multiple projects of significant scope (at 339.2 level).
