Optical Architect

Nova•Austin, TX

About The Position

Nova’s Optics group develops the optical paths for its high-end optical metrology tools, from light sources and core optical components through to sensors. The group works across research, characterization, concept design, feasibility studies, final design, and qualification, with members leading multiple research, design, and engineering activities in a multidisciplinary environment. The Optical Architect leads the optics team’s research, designs, deliveries, and support, and serves as the technical authority for the team’s work. The role has responsibility for light sources, optical fibers, and optical modules, as well as vendor management. It works closely with hardware and systems teams to deliver integrated opto-mechanical and electro-optical modules, participates in development reviews and specification work, and owns documentation supporting production transfer and service.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Physics or Optical Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of practical, hands-on industry experience developing and characterizing complex systems, including light sources, imaging and illumination systems, and sensors.
  • Experience designing and implementing lab setups to measure optical effects and performance.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB and/or Python; Python is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Spectral Ellipsometric systems and elements is required.
  • Independent and proactive approach.
  • Methodical and organized work style.
  • Ability to collaborate with system and hardware teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of optical design software such as Zemax or CodeV.
  • Experience with equipment for the semiconductor industry.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Independent, motivated, and enthusiastic about breakthroughs.
  • Fast learner.

Responsibilities

  • Lead optics team research, designs, deliveries, and support.
  • Serve as the technical authority for the team’s activities, including developing physical models; designing optical systems; simulating and analyzing tool-related physical effects; and conducting lab tests for feasibility studies, root-cause analysis, and design qualification.
  • Take full responsibility for light sources, optical fibers, and optical modules.
  • Manage vendors and control their activities.
  • Establish strong interfaces with hardware and system teams to ensure aligned delivery of combined opto-mechanical and electro-optical modules.
  • Represent the optics team in the development process, including concept and feasibility studies, specification definition, design reviews, and test reviews.
  • Own team deliverable documentation required to support transfer to production and service, including operational descriptions and diagrams, alignment and test procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
