About The Position

This position is responsible for triaging, accessioning, processing, and performing phlebotomies for clinical laboratory specimens. The role involves patient check-in, specimen preparation, centrifugation, aliquoting, resolving problem specimens, managing send-out tests, and performing CLIA-waived testing. Additionally, the position requires phlebotomy services, data entry in EPIC, and managing lab encounters for outside lab requests and athlete physicals.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a phlebotomy course; or a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of relevant experience.
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy on patients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively - verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others.
  • Ability to work in a potentially stressful environment.
  • Ability to quickly learn various aspects of Lab Operations.
  • Knowledge of Medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and record all specimens, print labels and/or paperwork, identify specimen containers, and create packing lists for delivery.
  • Perform patient check-in for specimen collection.
  • Prepare clinical pathology laboratory specimens in EPIC for designated departments/locations.
  • Unpack and route specimens by type to various areas.
  • Prepare all specimens received for testing in designated laboratory departments or locations.
  • Perform centrifugation and aliquoting of samples.
  • Resolve and document problem specimens and/or orders.
  • Ensure specimens and requisitions are correctly labeled.
  • Send out tests to corresponding labs, demonstrating knowledge of common send-out tests and the ability to navigate reference laboratory test menus.
  • Recognize specimen rejections and complete appropriate follow-up procedures.
  • Answer/redirect phone calls.
  • Keep track of reagent and supply inventory.
  • Empty Biohazard boxes/bins.
  • Communicate daily on the communication log.
  • Process add-on test requests from providers.
  • Assist client services with provider requests.
  • Perform CLIA-waived testing and enter results into EPIC.
  • Perform phlebotomies and provide patients with prepared written instructions for self-collect specimens.
  • Work in EPIC for phlebotomy tasks.
  • Enter lab encounters for outside lab requests & athlete physicals.
  • Attach lab results to the EHR from reference labs.
  • Compile final results for athlete physicals for the University of Florida’s United Athletic Association (UAA).
