About The Position

The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking motivated, dynamic individuals to join their team at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Port Charlotte, Florida. This skilled nursing facility boasts a loyal team of long-term employees and a fantastic work culture. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Utilities and Maintenance Superintendent, assisting in the repair and maintenance of the Veterans Nursing Home, ensuring environmental controls and equipment are operational and properly maintained. The role involves assisting with routine and special inspections, compiling and reporting information on energy consumption and vehicle use, and contributing to energy conservation programs. The position requires performing routine preventative maintenance, providing routine repair services to defective equipment, and resolving routine work orders. The incumbent will also assist with the assembly, delivery, and installation of facility equipment, follow the preventive maintenance plan, and communicate effectively with staff, residents, and vendors. Tasks must be completed in a timely manner with documented outcomes. Maintaining tools, work equipment, and the work area in a clean, organized manner is essential, as is supporting a safe and accident-free environment. The role requires a willingness to learn new procedures and techniques, accept assignments and instructions agreeably, and complete in-service training. Other related duties as required, and adherence to FDVA, Homes Program, and facility policies, procedures, and standards are expected. The position may require being on "emergency call status" as designated by the supervisor. This position is in the Other Personnel Service (OPS) system.

Requirements

  • Recent experience of at least one (1) year in maintenance and repair of buildings, plumbing, and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
  • Experience working with plumbing, HVAC, and electrical equipment.
  • Successful completion of the due diligence process to include, but not limited to, a Level II background check and drug test.

  • Experience with a long-term care or hospital environment with a geriatric population.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Utilities and Maintenance Superintendent and Maintenance Repairman in the repair and maintenance of the Veterans Nursing Home.
  • Ensure environmental controls and equipment are operational and properly maintained.
  • Assist with routine and special inspections to comply with laws, rules, and policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the compilation and reporting of information on energy consumption and vehicle use.
  • Contribute to the implementation of programs for energy conservation.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently and the physical condition of the buildings does not deteriorate.
  • Provides routine repair services to defective equipment, repairs physical plant deficiencies, resolves routine work orders, assists with the assembly, delivery, and installation of facility equipment.
  • Follows the preventive maintenance plan.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, residents, and vendors.
  • Completes tasks in a timely manner and document outcomes.
  • Maintain tools, work equipment and work area in clean, organized manner.
