About The Position

The Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs is seeking motivated, dynamic individuals for an OPS Food Control Specialist position at the Clyde E Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Saint Augustine, St. Johns County, FL. This role involves working under the supervision of the Food Service Director and the Food Service Administrator in the day-to-day food service operation. The incumbent may also act as the Food Service Administrator when that staff member is absent. The agency is dedicated to serving veterans and boasts a skilled nursing facility with a loyal team of long-term employees and a fantastic work culture. This is an OPS (Other Personnel Services) position, which may be eligible for benefits. Other OPS (Temporary) Food Support Worker positions may be filled from this advertisement within six months of the closing date.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of verifiable institutional cooking experience.
  • Able and willing to work weekends and holidays as required.
  • Able and willing to lift to 50 pounds.
  • Able and willing to work overtime as necessary.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English; writing, speaking, reading & understanding.
  • Have excellent customer skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Successful completion of the employment screening process to include, but not limited to, a national background investigation and drug test.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with food service in a cafeteria style setting.
  • Have basic computer skills.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the supervision of the Food Service Director and the Food Service Administrator in the day-to-day food service operation at the State Veterans' Nursing Home.
  • Act as the Food Service Administrator when that staff member is absent from the facility.
  • Ensure that food is stored, prepared, distributed and served under sanitary conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with state and facility safety procedures in the operation of food production and cleaning of equipment.
  • Ensure that clean and sanitary conditions are maintained in all areas of the kitchen food preparation and serving lines.
  • Turn on and set temperature on grills, stoves, deep fryer, and broiler.
  • Operate and maintain equipment used according to FDVA procedures.
  • Be responsible for food estimate requirements and preparation/cooking of all types of hot and cold food items according to menu and approved recipes in Meal Tracker.
  • Conduct inventory checks of food items and order items as needed.
  • Reorder items falling below minimum on weekly basis.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Check and approve food requisitions, deliveries and issues receiving reports.
  • Attend in-service training classes.
  • Perform related duties assigned by supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
