About The Position

The Aerospace Corporation, operating a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), is seeking an OPIR Synthetic Scene Generation Engineer for the Mission Payloads Division (MPD), specifically within the Integrated Sensor Design and Analysis Department (ISDAD). This role involves developing the nation's next generation of remote sensing systems for Department of Defense and national security customers. The ISDAD team focuses on designing and assessing optics and electro-optical sensor systems, modeling end-to-end sensing systems, developing data processing and computer vision algorithms, and producing simulated data products. The work directly influences government acquisition decisions and the development of critical sensing capabilities for national defense. The OPIR Synthetic Scene Generation Engineer will provide expertise in modeling and simulation of remote electro-optical/infrared sensing systems and constellations, with a focus on missile warning and tracking applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Optics, Physics, Astronomy, Imagining Science, or another related discipline.
  • Eight or more years of experience performing electro-optical sensor, system, and/or phenomenology modeling and simulation (workforce and/or advanced degree pursuit).
  • Strong analytic problem-solving skills relating to the performance of passive remote sensing electro-optical visible and infrared sensors, especially OPIR systems.
  • Experience with topics such as radiometry, radiative transfer modeling, image chain analysis, target detection, sensor performance metrics, earth-background infrared signatures, and visible and infrared backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience using a common processing language (e.g. MATLAB, Python, IDL, C/C++, Fortran) to implement modeling and simulation analysis.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to coordinate efforts and work with internal teams, Government customers, and contractor personnel.
  • Ability to travel domestically occasionally.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
  • For Senior Engineering Specialist: Twelve or more years of total experience performing electro-optical sensor, system, and/or phenomenology modeling and simulation (workforce and/or advanced degree pursuit).
  • For Senior Engineering Specialist: Demonstrated technical or project leadership experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in modeling remote sensing engagement scenarios using radiative transport solvers and scene simulation software such as MODTRAN, SSGM, ASSET, DIRSIG, PRA Toolkit, or FLITES.
  • Operational understanding of remote sensing, radiance transfer, and applied physics.
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Intelligence Community Customers.

Responsibilities

  • Create and validate synthetic imagery for remote sensor system testing and evaluation.
  • Develop unique, efficient scene generation solutions using existing tools and research new capabilities to support sensor system evaluations.
  • Utilize electro-optical/infrared modeling expertise to support the design and development of overhead, persistent, Earth-background remote sensors for various applications.
  • Leverage physics-based modeling and simulation to support the development of new remote sensing concepts, including technical performance requirements and assessment of proposed designs.
  • Collaborate with internal Aerospace program office leads, Government personnel, and the technical community to identify and advise on modeling and simulation needs and opportunities.
  • Document technical findings in reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
