About The Position

The primary purpose of this role is to provide strong comprehensive ophthalmology expertise with current standard of care cataract surgery support and associated procedure expertise to participate in the expert clinical eye care for Beetham Eye Institute (BEI), Joslin Diabetes Center patients. Time will be allocated as follows: Clinic 100%. Requirements

  • Degree in medicine from an accredited school
  • Residency in Ophthalmology
  • Minimum 3 years of general ophthalmology experience (including residency)
  • Minimum 1 year of cataract surgery experience (including residency)
  • Certified license to practice in Massachusetts
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within Ophthalmology
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, ability to interact with peers and staff, fiscal and operational aspects of administrative responsibilities such as ensuring accountability in clinical and scholarly activities, staff development and budget management.
  • Effective communication skills are needed to share information and influence other investigators and internal/external colleagues as well as to mentor and develop medical staff, fellows and students.
  • Articulate both verbally and in writing with regard to evidence-based clinical diabetes eye care.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to perform intravitreal injections preferable but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Operates on patients with surgical cataract and associated disease, including but not limited to cataract extraction, intraocular lens placement, utilization of premium intraocular lenses, posterior capsulotomy, and other surgery as indicated and qualified.
  • Performs procedures, including cataract extraction for visually significant cataracts or visualization of the posterior pole if medically required, laser posterior capsulotomy and peripheral iridotomy.
  • Participates in Longwood Medical Area call and consult coverage, and provides emergency care as needed for urgent cases.
  • Performs comprehensive ophthalmic examinations for diabetic and non-diabetic patients.
  • Examines patients' eyes to ensure eye health and recommend appropriate treatment and follow-up.
  • Prescribes glasses to correct vision.
  • Provides emergency care and triage ophthalmic care as needed.
  • Interacts in a collegial way with medical staff and colleagues.
  • Participates in referral development.
  • Works in a collegial fashion with other Joslin Diabetes Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center health professionals.
  • Participates in Beetham Eye Institute clinical research & clinical trials through study participant recruitment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
