About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to patient care and administrative duties within an eye care setting. This role involves direct patient interaction, performing diagnostic tests, assisting with procedures, and maintaining the organization and readiness of examination rooms and equipment. The technician will also play a role in patient flow and communication, ensuring a smooth and efficient patient experience.

  • Ability to manage patient flow and communication.
  • Flexibility to perform other duties as required.

  • Experience in informing potential LASIK candidates of options.
  • Experience in scheduling LASIK consults.

Responsibilities

  • Acquaint new patients with office procedures and inform them of the purpose and effects of tests.
  • Obtain and document comprehensive patient history, including chief complaint, medical history, family history, allergies, medications, social history, and review of systems.
  • Perform and document diagnostic measurements such as visual acuity, refraction, tonometry, Schirmer testing, color screening, visual field testing, corneal modeling, and other specialized tests.
  • Assist with complex clinical procedures, including changing dressings and administering eye drops, ointments, and oral medications.
  • Instruct patients on home care.
  • Refill prescriptions with doctor's approval and document in the patient chart.
  • Escort patients to the optical shop or after exams as appropriate.
  • Inform potential LASIK candidates about options and document their interest.
  • Schedule LASIK consultations when possible.
  • Be punctual for scheduled shifts and meetings.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment such as lenses, mirrors, and prisms.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly stored.
  • Organize examination rooms between patients.
  • Maintain organization of medication cabinets.
  • Refill supplies such as cotton balls and chin paper.
  • File charts during downtime.
  • Clean and stock examination rooms daily.
  • Properly store lenses at the end of the day.
  • Turn off lights and power to all equipment at the end of the day.
  • Travel to other Spectrum Eye locations as needed.
  • Determine patient priority for treatment initiation from the waiting room.
  • Escort patients from the waiting room to the treatment room.
  • Advise patients on who will see them next and ensure their comfort.
  • Maintain a smooth patient flow to the physician.
