About The Position

The Laurel Eye Clinic has a full-time career opportunity available as an Ophthalmic Technician. This position is based out of the Mercer office, but candidates must be willing to work flexible hours and travel to provide coverage at other Laurel Eye Clinic locations as needed such as the Grove City office. Travel benefits are provided. Candidates must be positive, team oriented individuals dedicated to providing excellent patient care.

Requirements

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant/Technician, LPN, medical assistant or individual with medical office experience preferred.
  • Training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors clinical flow checking for patient arrival and maintains a steady stream of patients to the doctor.
  • Properly introduces themselves and acquaints patients with the office procedures, informs them of the purpose of all tests to be performed and how they will be affected during these tests.
  • Obtains and documents patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
  • Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement of the following tasks: visual acuities, pinhole test, cover test, version test, pupil assessment, auto refraction; and as needed manifest refractions, schirmer tear test, color vision test, and stereo test.
  • Accurately reads all patient’s prescriptions on lensometer and properly cleans materials prior to returning to patient.
  • Performs external slit lamp exam, tonometry, visual fields, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and pachymetry.
  • Retrieves contact lens trials for fitting and performs insertion and removal education with the patient as requested by the doctor.
  • May be required to perform advanced skills for biometry, topography, photography, and keratometry.
  • Dilates patients with appropriate medications and technique.
  • Assists with office minor procedures, including room set-up, cleaning, and consenting patients.
  • Prepares biopsies/cultures for the lab and call the lab for pick-up of sample or transport to lab as necessary.
  • Cleans and stocks exam rooms.
  • Answers patient or co-worker questions, including telephone inquiries and patient complaints.
  • Responsible for all clinic equipment; ensure it is functioning properly; request repairs and maintenance, as needed.
  • Provides back-up support to other technicians and scribes, including following up with patients.
  • Provides patient education as needed including, but not limited to: use of Amsler grid testing with patient for at-home monitoring or any and all physician-generated patient instructions.
  • Escorts patient to check-out upon completion of exam.
  • Maintains presence in exam area, when not actively working with a patient, to assist doctor or transport patient.
  • Obtains a wide-ranging fund of knowledge applicable to ophthalmic care, including terminology, common abbreviations, and disease signs, symptoms, and treatments.
