About The Position

Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is seeking an Ophthalmic Scribe to join their innovative team. This role involves accurate documentation, summarization of ocular examinations and recommendations, ICD10 coding and CPT in patient charts, while maintaining patient flow and communication. The position requires travel to various clinics and supporting clinic hours Monday through Friday, 6:30 am - 6:30 pm, with potential for weekend hours. RCTX is a large, respected retina-only ophthalmology practice with 26 physicians, advanced diagnostic equipment, and 25 locations. Requirements

  • Knows required components of examination for appropriate CPT coding.
  • Understands Medicare and other common insurance requirements for quality reporting.
  • Training and understanding of HIPAA requirements and patient confidentiality.
  • Strong, professional interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Team-orientation.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Strong organization with attention to detail.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to spell accurately while charting.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Ability to educate patients regarding eye drop instillation and other treatment plan instructions.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and/or ophthalmic terminology.
  • High school diploma required.
  • At least 6 months experience in a medical office, preferably an ophthalmology office.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for entire work shift.
  • Must be able to move frequently from standing and sitting.
  • Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly-lit setting.
  • Must be able to hear softly spoken words.
  • Lifting required up to 30 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Scribe certification (certified ophthalmic assistant), preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Correctly summarizes and documents physician verbalizations during examinations, including charting, documenting additions to chief complaint, assessment, and recommendations, and closing patient charts promptly.
  • Accurate ICD10 and CPT coding in patient charts.
  • Assists during exams by providing patient assistance, additional medications/instruments, and following directions in medical emergencies.
  • Maintains awareness of patient communication to repeat information, provide written instructions, and hand out patient education materials.
  • Ensures patient understanding of all instructions.
  • Accurately documents amendments to patient charts per practice protocols.
  • Maintains clinic patient flow, including confirming insurance authorization before treatment.
  • Provides support by executing Ophthalmic Technician duties as needed.
  • Alerts physician to patient-related forms requiring completion.
  • Guides patients to the front desk after exams and ensures proper follow-up appointments are communicated.
  • Evaluates examination room condition for adequate supplies and patient safety.
  • Notifies physician of changes to the daily schedule, especially emergencies.
  • Facilitates communication between physician and staff to minimize clinic flow disruptions.
  • Performs other assigned tasks.
