About The Position

The City of Sugar Land is seeking a full-time Operator in the Groundwater division of the Utilities Department. This role is responsible for the daily inspection and operation of the City’s groundwater facilities, including groundwater plants, wells, and elevated storage tanks. The Operator must understand the water treatment process, proper chemical addition and reactions, and adhere to process targets to maintain proper facility operation. The City operates both chloramine and free chlorine public water systems. This position also assists and cooperates with contractors and staff in other City departments during capital improvement projects and assists with water treatment chemical orders and deliveries, including accompanying vendors to plants to ensure proper, safe, and accurate deliveries. For the Groundwater Operator III role, duties are performed in a lead capacity, coordinating and guiding team activities as requested by the Groundwater Field Supervisor. All positions require recording and logging daily inspection data, including well production, plant flows, pump hour readings, chemical usage, and water quality test results, in both hardcopy and electronic formats. Proficiency in the Utility’s SCADA program is required for monitoring and controlling groundwater facility processes and equipment. Work involves evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call rotations. Operators are required to work as essential employees before, during, and after emergencies or disasters, including hurricanes. Additional duties may be assigned by management.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED certification.
Two (2) years of experience in groundwater operations, maintenance, and repair or one (1) year of direct experience at the City of Sugar Land groundwater plants.
Valid Class "C" Texas Drivers License.
Class “C” Groundwater Operator certification by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) required.

Responsibilities

Daily inspection and operation of the City’s groundwater facilities (i.e., groundwater plants, groundwater wells, and elevated storage tanks).
Understand the water treatment process, proper chemical addition and reactions, and adhere to process targets in order to maintain proper operation of facilities.
Assist and cooperate with contractors and staff in other City departments during rehabilitation and upgrade capital improvement projects.
Assist as required with water treatment chemical orders and deliveries.
Accompany vendors to plants to ensure deliveries are conducted properly, safely, and accurately.
Perform groundwater duties in a lead capacity (for Operator III), leading, coordinating, and guiding the activities of the team, as requested by the Groundwater Field Supervisor.
Record and log daily inspection data including well production, plant flows, pump hour readings, chemical usage, and water quality test results, at all groundwater facilities.
Log data in both hardcopy and electronic formats.
Proficient in the use of the Utility’s SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) program to monitor and control groundwater facility processes and equipment.
Work involves evening, weekends and holidays, overtime and on-call on a rotation basis.
Work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, including hurricanes.
Perform any other duties and responsibilities as directed by management.
