About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Water Reclamation, this position is skilled in operation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and laboratory work of a complex nature related to all operational functions of wastewater treatment. The role involves making regular checks of the water reclamation plant and effluent pumping and storage works and process equipment to assure proper operation and making adjustments as required. It also includes carrying out preventative maintenance and repairs, modifying and inspecting, lubricating, changing filters, and changing oil on all water reclamation plant and effluent pumping and storage equipment. The position requires replacing various parts on sewage treatment and effluent pumping and storage equipment. The operator is required to be on standby when assigned, respond to call outs, and take corrective action as required. They will answer emergency malfunction calls or alarms, check to locate the trouble source, perform prescribed procedures to determine the cause of the problem, and take necessary steps to restore operations. The role also involves assisting skilled tradesmen, technicians, and engineers in major repair or maintenance work, drawing samples for testing, and conducting routine laboratory tests. Daily monitoring and analysis of machinery, historical computer data, and process data are key duties. The position may involve minor supervision of on-site staff periodically and assisting in the training of junior operators. Tabulating and compiling data relating to the water reclamation plant and pumping system operation and maintenance is also part of the role. The operator exercises considerable independence of judgment in daily routine, with non-routine issues forwarded to a supervisor. Data entry and extraction from a computerized maintenance program is required. The role includes cleaning equipment, pipes, valves, chambers, rails, heaters, traps, and other equipment. Janitorial tasks such as painting, changing light bulbs, and heating and cooling system maintenance in and around the treatment plant and effluent pumping system are also included. Ground maintenance duties like cutting lawns, trimming shrubs, watering, weeding, snow removal, and general upkeep are expected. All employees are required to assist in providing emergency services, and duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.

Requirements

  • Environmental Operator Certification Program Certificate - Level II W.W.T.
  • Minimum 4 years experience in water reclamation plant operation and maintenance.
  • WHMIS BC EOCP Chlorine Handlers Certificate or Chlorination Course through WET (Water Engineering Technology program) or equivalent.
  • Level I First Aid
  • Valid B.C. Driver's Licence, Class 5
  • Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance procedures relating to the water reclamation plant, effluent pumping and storage systems and all materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of the above.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform standard laboratory tests and analysis procedures.
  • Good working knowledge of the principles, methods, equipment, and materials used in the water reclamation plant and pumping system operation.
  • Good working knowledge of the safe handling procedures of sodium hypochlorite and other chemicals used in wastewater treatment and pumping system operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • A mechanical aptitude and ability.
  • A working knowledge of pumps, motors, hydraulics, compressors, gas systems, UV Disinfection and sand filtration and other related equipment.
  • Proficient use of computer-related software and general office equipment.
  • Demonstrated abilities using small power tools and other related equipment.
  • Ability to make accurate notes, sketches and observation reports.
  • Knowledge of control valves and pilot systems relative to their operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, alarms and direct control.
  • Thorough knowledge of WorkSafe BC Regulations and City of Vernon safety policies relating to the work.
  • Self-starter and able to pre-plan and carry out tasks with limited supervision.
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with contractors and the general public.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to undertake training including progress toward Level III certification.
  • Able to pass a respirator fit test consistent with SCBA manufacturer specifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Two-year Water Quality Program supplemented by two years experience.
  • Four years of working in a Municipal Wastewater Treatment System.

Responsibilities

  • All persons employed by the City of Vernon will be required to assist the City in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.
