About The Position

The University of North Texas (UNT) College of Music is seeking a part-time Opera Scenic Carpenter for the opera season. This role involves working with the opera scenic technical director (TD) and opera scenic designer to build, install, and strike opera scenery. All construction will occur in the UNT dance and theater arts scenic shop on the UNT campus, under the supervision of the TD.

Requirements

• 3 years of experience building theatrical scenery for a collegiate or professional level program.
• Associate's degree or higher in a related field.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings for theatrical set construction.
• Ability to lead a team of carpenters.
• Extensive knowledge of safety in using all shop tools and in construction methods.
• Ability to perform tasks involving lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, and climbing stairs and ladders.

Responsibilities

• Interpreting technical drawings and cutting lumber as indicated.
• Assembling/constructing set pieces using safe and secure methods.
• Loading and unloading set pieces into a truck for transport across campus.
• Building, installing, and striking opera scenery.
• Leading a team of carpenters.
• Ensuring safety in the shop and during construction.
