About The Position

24-MAG LLC is recruiting experienced open-source software engineers for a remote consulting engagement supporting an advanced AI training and software-engineering evaluation project. Contributors will create, solve, review, and validate challenging engineering tasks across front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, infrastructure, and developer-tooling environments. The work involves exploring unfamiliar repositories, implementing and debugging software, assessing architecture, writing and reviewing tests, translating code between languages, and evaluating AI-generated patches for correctness, security, and maintainability. This is a part-time independent contractor engagement, expected to require approximately 15 hours per week. It is fully remote and open globally, with a flexible schedule. Compensation is displayed as $100–$150 per hour, but actual payment is output-based and made per task that meets project specifications. Task completion times may vary, and minimum weekly submission requirements apply; the exact number of required tasks is not specified. Selected contributors are expected to begin initial tasks approximately 24–48 hours after onboarding. Project scope, repositories, languages, and evaluation standards may evolve. Work must not use confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, private repository, software organization, or other third party.

Requirements

  • Meaningful ownership of or contributions to one or more open-source repositories, beyond documentation, dependency updates, formatting, or minor corrections.
  • Strong software-engineering experience in a substantial technical area such as front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, developer tooling, or infrastructure.
  • Ability to understand and modify unfamiliar codebases quickly.
  • Strong debugging, repository-navigation, code-review, and testing skills.
  • Experience with multiple programming languages.
  • Strong understanding of maintainable software architecture and ability to evaluate code for correctness, security, and maintainability.
  • Ability to discuss specific repositories, issues, pull requests, and code personally authored, and to clearly explain prior design and implementation decisions.
  • Public or otherwise verifiable GitHub profile.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience translating implementations between programming languages.
  • Experience with technologies such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, Rust, C++, C#, Ruby, PHP, or comparable languages.

Responsibilities

  • Explore unfamiliar repositories and understand their architecture, dependencies, modules, services, and contribution conventions.
  • Implement and modify functionality across front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, or infrastructure components while following established coding and architectural standards.
  • Review issues, pull requests, and existing implementations before making changes.
  • Validate behavior across affected components.
  • Reproduce software issues and trace execution and data flow to identify root causes.
  • Analyze interactions across APIs, services, libraries, databases, and external dependencies.
  • Assess architectural fit, maintainability, and downstream impact of proposed changes.
  • Write or review unit, integration, regression, and end-to-end tests, and ensure fixes are robust without introducing regressions.
  • Work across multiple programming languages and ecosystems, translating implementations between languages when required while preserving intended behavior.
  • Review AI-generated patches for correctness, completeness, security, and maintainability; identify fragile or unnecessarily complex implementations and provide structured technical feedback and stronger recommendations.
  • Discuss personally authored code and specific repositories, pull requests, and issues; explain design and implementation decisions.
  • Collaborate remotely with engineers and project stakeholders, and document important technical and validation decisions.
