About The Position

The Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine is seeking a full-time academic Transfusion Medicine physician to join our exceptional faculty and serve as Assistant Director of the Transfusion Medicine service. This is an open-rank faculty position. Rank and tenure will be commensurate with the candidate's experience, qualifications, and funding. The Department of Pathology includes the divisions of Anatomic Pathology, Transdisciplinary Pathology, Research, and Clinical Pathology which includes Clinical Chemistry, Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, HLA, Clinical Microbiology, and Molecular Diagnostics clinical laboratories. Faculty expertise supports strong clinical programs at UI Health in solid organ and bone marrow transplant, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology and more, including the largest Sickle Cell Center in the Midwest which serves over 700 patients. Opportunities exist to participate and collaborate on clinical research. The Department hosts an ACGME accredited Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency program and an ACGME accredited Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine fellowship program. The UI Health Transfusion Service is operated through a partnership with Vitalant, one of the U.S.’s largest nonprofit blood and biotherapies healthcare organizations. The Transfusion Service includes the UI Hospital Blood Bank, which transfuses approximately 25,000 blood components annually and the Hemapheresis service, which performs about 1800 therapeutic apheresis procedures each year. The UIC Department of Pathology is among the country’s fastest-growing academic departments and is structured to provide a unique environment to foster the development of academic careers. In addition to providing medical education and diagnostic services for Transfusion Medicine, the successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a program in translational research at UIC.

Requirements

MD or DO degree
Board certification or board eligible in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine from the American Board of Pathology
Eligible for medical licensure in Illinois
Fellowship training in an ACGME accredited Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine program
Significant experience in Transfusion Medicine

Responsibilities

Provide diagnostic services for Transfusion Medicine
Along with the Director of Transfusion Medicine: Ensure test systems provide quality service in all aspects of testing – preanalytic, analytic, and post-analytic
Provide clinical service coverage of Transfusion Medicine, including participation in on-call coverage of Blood Bank and Therapeutic Apheresis service
Assist providers in interpretation of immunohematology test results
Provide consultation on blood component selection, transfusion reaction evaluation, and immunohematology test selection for patients
Evaluate and manage inpatient and ambulatory requests for therapeutic apheresis procedures
Ensure that interpretative tests and consultation reports include all pertinent information
Assist in developing a working relationship with Clinical Service Units
Participate in management of critical testing and critical test reporting and monitoring
Provide medical education in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine
Provide education to medical students, residents, fellows, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows
Monitor and assist colleagues and subordinates in the preparation and presentation of appropriate intramural and extramural lectures and conferences
Participate in appropriate continue education programs such as in-service lectures for laboratory employees or medical staff
Establish and maintain a program in translational research at UIC
Actively participate in basic, translational and/or clinical research or investigative pursuits, including but not limited to, clinical informatics, clinical trials involving patients, new instrumentation or innovative testing methodologies, etc.
Collaborate in and cooperate with ongoing Departmental or inter-departmental research projects in the College of Medicine, other UI Colleges of School and/or external academic institutions
Actively mentor and involve medical students, residents and fellows in research
Perform other tasks as assigned by Clinical Pathology leadership to support departmental goals
