The Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine is seeking a full-time academic Transfusion Medicine physician to join our exceptional faculty and serve as Assistant Director of the Transfusion Medicine service. This is an open-rank faculty position. Rank and tenure will be commensurate with the candidate's experience, qualifications, and funding. The Department of Pathology includes the divisions of Anatomic Pathology, Transdisciplinary Pathology, Research, and Clinical Pathology which includes Clinical Chemistry, Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, HLA, Clinical Microbiology, and Molecular Diagnostics clinical laboratories. Faculty expertise supports strong clinical programs at UI Health in solid organ and bone marrow transplant, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology and more, including the largest Sickle Cell Center in the Midwest which serves over 700 patients. Opportunities exist to participate and collaborate on clinical research. The Department hosts an ACGME accredited Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency program and an ACGME accredited Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine fellowship program. The UI Health Transfusion Service is operated through a partnership with Vitalant, one of the U.S.’s largest nonprofit blood and biotherapies healthcare organizations. The Transfusion Service includes the UI Hospital Blood Bank, which transfuses approximately 25,000 blood components annually and the Hemapheresis service, which performs about 1800 therapeutic apheresis procedures each year. The UIC Department of Pathology is among the country’s fastest-growing academic departments and is structured to provide a unique environment to foster the development of academic careers. UIC is one of the country’s largest and most diverse medical schools and ranks among the top colleges of medicine in the growth of extramural grant funding. Academic appointments necessitate participation in medical education and institutional, regional, and national conferences. A high commitment to excellence in clinical service with outstanding communication skills is essential. In addition to providing medical education and diagnostic services for Transfusion Medicine, the successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a program in translational research at UIC.
