About The Position

The Off-Season Ropes Challenge Course Facilitator-in-Training assists in the safe and effective operation of the ropes challenge course and its programs. This position supports the delivery of high-quality experiential learning activities while promoting participant growth, teamwork, and personal achievement in a safe and supportive environment.

Requirements

  • Commitment to following the policies, procedures, and mission of Girl Scouts of Western New York.
  • Ability to demonstrate and progressively master challenge course facilitation skills as outlined in the facilitator assessment process.
  • Experience working with and supervising youth in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Current RTE and CPR Pro certification, or willingness to obtain certification during designated training.
  • Physical stamina and good health necessary to participate in and facilitate challenge course activities.
  • Availability to work weekends and other scheduled program dates.
  • Commitment to completing a minimum of 60 program hours to qualify for advancement within the facilitator training program.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
  • Possess the physical strength, endurance, and mobility required to actively supervise participants and facilitate challenge course activities.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and maintain a high level of situational awareness.
  • Exhibit enthusiasm, patience, flexibility, self-control, and a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to the diverse needs of participants.
  • Participate in both structured and unstructured program activities.
  • Follow verbal and written directions effectively.
  • Communicate professionally with participants, staff, volunteers, and community members.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to participant safety, inclusion, and positive youth development.
  • All Employees of Girl Scouts must maintain an active, annual membership in Girl Scouts of Western New York. This membership must be renewed annually, and all newly hired employees are expected to enroll with GSWNY within the first 30 days of their employment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all applicable standards, regulations, and guidelines established by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT), the American Camp Association (ACA), and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
  • Assist with facilitating games, initiatives, team-building activities, and introductory challenge course experiences.
  • Educate participants on ropes challenge course elements, proper equipment use, and safety procedures.
  • Assist in developing and implementing progressive ropes challenge course experiences that meet participant needs and program objectives.
  • Provide participants with appropriate and attainable challenges that encourage personal growth and confidence.
  • Promote and maintain a culture of safety by leading through example and adhering to all established procedures.
  • Promptly report accidents, incidents, equipment concerns, or safety hazards to the Ropes Challenge Course Manager.
  • Assist in inspecting challenge course elements and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and proper working condition prior to each program.
  • Ensure the proper use, care, storage, and maintenance of all ropes challenge course equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records in the Ropes Challenge Course Equipment Log and other required documentation.
  • Attend required trainings, refreshers, and professional development opportunities and successfully demonstrate required facilitation and safety skills. MUST be trained on both ropes challenge courses (Piperwood & Seven Hills) in order to facilitate a program on a designated course.
  • Complete evaluations, timesheets, incident reports, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Participate in facilitator evaluations and skill assessments as part of the advancement process.
  • Provide excellent customer service and create a welcoming, inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Support the mission, goals, and values of Girl Scouts of Western New York.
