About The Position

This is a 12-week internship for Occupational Therapy (OT) students and an 8-week internship for Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students. Both internships consist of 40 hours per week. The start date is flexible. Interns will work within an inpatient hospital setting and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team. The program offers both group and individual OT services, with typically 2-3 OT groups each day, along with 1:1 sessions and assessments as needed. Interns are expected to engage in self-directed learning, seek feedback, be adaptable, and demonstrate patience and compassion when working with a challenging patient population.

Requirements

  • Current student of an accredited Occupational Therapy Institution.
  • OT students must be Master’s or Doctoral degree level.
  • OTA students must be Associate's degree level.
  • Student must be enrolled at an academic institution that has an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt.
  • Strong foundation in child/adolescent mental health theory and related OT theory and practice.
  • Strong foundation in clinical reasoning.
  • Strong foundation in the foundations of evidence-based practice.
  • Strong foundation in group theory and application.
  • Strong foundation in teaching/learning concepts and applications related to staff, client, and caregiver education.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in 1:1 supervision with a licensed occupational therapist.
  • Engage in group and individual OT services.
  • Conduct OT groups (typically 2-3 per day).
  • Perform 1:1 sessions and assessments as deemed appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Engage in self-directed learning.
  • Independently seek learning opportunities and feedback.
  • Demonstrate flexible thinking and adaptability.
  • Be ready to learn from all experiences.
  • Show patience and compassion when working with the patient population.
