About The Position

This is a 12-week internship for Occupational Therapy (OT) students or an 8-week internship for Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students. Both internships consist of 40 hours per week. The start date is flexible. The program utilizes a group supervision model with a ratio of 6-10 students to 3 clinical instructors (2 onsite, 1 off-site faculty). Learning is facilitated through personal and group supervision, including video conferencing with university faculty. The focus is on self-reflection, self-evaluation, and peer critique to ensure a learning-centered experience. Students are expected to engage in self-directed learning, seek learning opportunities and feedback, and demonstrate flexible thinking and adaptability. Patience and compassion are essential when working with the adolescent patient population in a Residential Treatment Center setting.

Requirements

  • Current student of an accredited Occupational Therapy Institution.
  • OT students must be Master’s or Doctoral degree level.
  • OTA students must be Associate's degree level.
  • Student must be enrolled at an academic institution that has an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt.
  • Strong foundation in child/adolescent mental health theory and related OT theory and practice.
  • Strong foundation in clinical reasoning.
  • Strong foundation in the foundations of evidence-based practice.
  • Strong foundation in group theory and application.
  • Strong foundation in teaching/learning concepts and applications related to staff, client, and caregiver education.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a 12-week OT fieldwork rotation or an 8-week OTA fieldwork rotation.
  • Work 40 hours per week for the duration of the internship.
  • Engage in self-directed learning.
  • Independently seek learning opportunities and feedback.
  • Demonstrate flexible thinking and adaptability.
  • Be ready to learn from all experiences.
  • Exhibit patience and compassion when working with the adolescent patient population.
  • Participate in personal and group supervision, both with on-site staff and university faculty via video-conferencing.
