About The Position

This is a 12-week internship for Occupational Therapy (OT) students or an 8-week internship for Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students. Both internships consist of 40 hours per week. The start date is flexible. Interns will work within an inpatient hospital setting as part of a continuum of care and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team. Supervision is provided by a licensed occupational therapist on-site daily. Both group and individual OT services are offered to clients, including typically 2-3 OT groups each day, 1:1 sessions, and assessments as needed.

Requirements

  • Current student of an accredited Occupational Therapy Institution.
  • OT students must be pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree.
  • OTA students must be pursuing an Associate's degree.
  • Student must be enrolled at an academic institution that has an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt.
  • Strong foundation in child/adolescent mental health theory and related OT theory and practice.
  • Strong foundation in clinical reasoning.
  • Strong foundation in the foundations of evidence-based practice.
  • Strong foundation in group theory and application.
  • Strong foundation in teaching/learning concepts and applications related to staff, client, and caregiver education.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in 12-week OT fieldwork rotations or 8-week OTA fieldwork rotations.
  • Work 40 hours per week for the duration of the internship.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide group and individual OT services to clients.
  • Conduct client assessments as deemed appropriate.
  • Engage in self-directed learning, independently seeking learning opportunities and feedback.
  • Demonstrate flexible thinking and adaptability.
  • Be ready to learn from all experiences.
  • Exhibit patience and compassion when working with the patient population.
