About The Position

A First Steps Occupational Therapist provides evaluations and therapy in various settings, assessing gross motor, fine motor, oral motor, perceptual motor, and sensory integration functioning. The therapist develops treatment plans and outcomes aligned with the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP), utilizing therapeutic modalities to enhance client skills. Responsibilities include communicating with staff and families about evaluations, treatments, and progress, providing parent training, and recommending home programming.

Requirements

  • A registered Occupational Therapist in the State of Indiana.
  • Currently registered/licensed with the Health Professions Bureau of Indiana.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to drive to and from each visit, therapy session, or Individual Family Service Plan site.
  • Have a reliable form of transportation.
  • Enrolled in the state of Indiana as First Steps provider.
  • Ability to lift a child three years of age and under, weighing up to 50 pounds, with adaptive equipment.
  • Communicate with other appropriate staff, supervisor, and agency personnel.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with children and families.
  • Provide developmental outcomes for each child and demonstrate activities and strategies to their families and or caregivers.
  • Able to be creative in exploring new and innovative ideas.
  • Ability to work independently and use sound judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience working with the pediatric population is preferred.
  • College practicum work in developing appropriate activities and strategies for infants and toddlers is appropriate if there is no experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide evaluations and therapy in a variety of settings.
  • Assess gross motor, fine motor, oral motor, perceptual motor, and sensory integration functioning.
  • Develop treatment plans and outcomes for each client's Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP).
  • Use therapeutic modalities and procedures to maintain or increase skills.
  • Communicate results of evaluations, treatments, and progress to staff and families.
  • Provide parent training and suggest home programming.
  • Determine each child’s assistive technology needs, including specialized equipment for positioning and play.
  • Keep daily progress notes, make quarterly reports, and maintain records of evaluations and home visits.
  • Complete an exit skills summary for children transitioning to the school system.
  • Participate in case conferences, staff meetings, and parent group meetings.
  • Collaborate with team members in writing annual IFSPs.
  • Attend workshops and conferences to enhance professional effectiveness and meet First Steps requirements.
  • Serve as a resource person for information on various developmental areas and skills.
  • Responsible for the health and safety of children served.
  • Serve as a role model for persons served.
  • Serve as an advocate and protect the rights of children served.
  • Participate in required training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Plan instructional activities for clients and assist families in accessing community activities.
  • Furnish required monthly statistics on a timely basis.
  • Respect the confidentiality and cultural diversity of children and families.
  • May serve on an agency committee.
