Reporting to the Director of Care, the Occupational Therapist is responsible for the assessment of function and adaptive behaviour and the treatment and prevention of disorders which affect function or adaptive behaviour in order to develop, maintain, rehabilitate, or augment function of adaptive behaviour in the areas of self-care, productivity and leisure. The Occupational Therapist will oversee and participate in the provision of quality occupational therapy in the delivery of Resident care. This role utilizes assessment, planning, implementation of treatment plans, evaluation, and documentation processes. The therapist recognizes variations in the continuum of health by implementing Occupational Therapy interventions that promote, maintain, and restore health, prevent disease and injury, and provide Resident comfort. The role requires adherence to established Occupational Therapy standards for safe, competent, and ethical care, including compliance with the Code of Ethics from the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and provincial regulatory bodies, as well as legal requirements for licensure and company policies. The therapist will ensure the development and implementation of classification processes and documentation according to standards set by the company, Regional Health Authority, and Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation. They will question policies inconsistent with resident outcomes, current practices, and safety standards, and provide safe and effective delivery of treatments and therapeutic interventions. This includes providing direct Resident care, ensuring a safe environment, identifying safety hazards, and participating in problem resolution. The role also involves protecting individual beliefs, values, confidentiality, privacy, and dignity, while promoting Resident participation, choice, and control in meeting healthcare needs. Ethical issues are to be identified and communicated to the interdisciplinary team and Director of Care. The Occupational Therapist demonstrates a positive, professional attitude, assumes responsibility for maintaining competence, seeks professional development, and shows openness to new ideas and change. They establish and maintain effective collegial relationships, monitor and problem-solve routine issues, and report workload issues promptly. Participation in the orientation and performance appraisal of colleagues and students is expected, along with responsible practices for cost-effective use of healthcare resources. Respect for Residents, families, and colleagues is paramount, and the therapist acts as a role model. Specialty qualifications and participation in research may be required. The role involves participation in the development, implementation, and monitoring of Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety guidelines, and working in a position of trust with vulnerable adults. Upholding and promoting the organization's values and philosophy, particularly relating to ethics, morality, and integrity as set out in Extendicare’s Code of Conduct, is essential. Other duties as assigned will also be part of the role.
