About The Position

About the Role Northeastern University is seeking an experienced Occupational Health & Safety Program Manager (OHSPM) to join our Environmental Compliance and Occupational Safety (ECOS) team. Reporting to the Director of Environmental Compliance and Occupational Safety, this role is central to developing, implementing, and managing the university's occupational health and safety compliance program across multiple campuses. You will serve as a trusted safety resource for university leaders, facilities personnel, and capital projects teams — evaluating the effectiveness of existing safety programs, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a proactive safety culture at every level of the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in a physical science, life science, public health, environmental science, engineering, occupational safety, or a related field — or formal training in one of these fields plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree
  • Experience as a safety professional in an industrial, construction, or building management setting
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations impacting industrial and construction work (29 CFR 1910 and 1926)
  • Hands-on experience developing and delivering safety training to adult learners, covering topics including hazardous materials, lockout/tagout, fall protection, confined spaces, bloodborne pathogens, hot work, and other high-risk tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control workplace hazards
  • Working knowledge of safe work requirements for trades professions including plumbers, carpenters, electricians, HVAC, and mechanical workers
  • Strong communication, coordination, and customer service skills with the ability to influence safety behavior across a diverse university community
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to learn a Learning Management System (LMS) or data management platform such as Campus Optics or HSI
  • Must be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and PPE, and able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • OSHA-approved 30-hour Industrial Safety or 30-hour Construction Safety certificate

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an academic research institution providing occupational and environmental health and safety services
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the university's point of contact for occupational health and safety compliance, tracking local, state, and federal standards across industrial hygiene, construction safety, and worker health programs.
  • Manage OSHA reporting requirements, liaise with regulators including OSHA and the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards, and coordinate corrective actions in response to inspection findings.
  • Oversee all occupational safety programs for Facilities Services, including confined space entry, lockout/tagout, fall protection, powered industrial trucks, electrical safety, hot work, and construction and renovation safety.
  • Conduct risk assessments, job hazard analyses, and internal audits, manage the industrial hygiene monitoring and medical surveillance programs, and present safety performance data to leadership.
  • Develop, deliver, and manage occupational health and safety training for facilities and capital project staff.
  • Leverage Learning Management Systems and data management platforms to ensure employees across all campuses are equipped to recognize and respond to workplace hazards.
  • Provide safety guidance on new facilities projects, conduct site inspections, perform gap analyses, and develop plans to address identified deficiencies.
  • Assist with accident investigations, participate in emergency response planning, and engage with senior managers, peer institutions, and regulatory agencies to continuously improve the university's safety programs.
