About The Position

This role functions as a Scrub Assistant, responsible for setting up tables, preparing procedure rooms, and ensuring the availability of sterile supplies and instruments. The position also involves transport duties and patient care responsibilities within the Labor & Delivery and Post Partum units.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
Successful completion from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologist, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), required.
A person may be employed or contracted with to practice surgical technology during the 12-month period immediately following successful completion of a surgical technology program, but may not continue to be employed beyond that period without documentation that the employee holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential required.
Must be and remain in good standing with NYS regulations, required.
Ability to lift, turn and position patients, required.
Ability to communicate effectively.

Nice To Haves

Prior PCA, fetal monitoring and Labor & Delivery experience, preferred.
Candidate must be female (BFOQ).

Responsibilities

Functions as a Scrub Assistant, including scrubbing, donning gown and gloves, setting up the operating room tray, and assisting the surgical team by passing instruments, sponges, and dressings.
Demonstrates cooperative participation as a member of the nursing team and assists RNs in orienting new staff to the scrub position.
Reports pertinent events during the shift, such as equipment or supply issues, to the RN.
Requests information and guidance from RNs when needed.
Compiles assignments in a timely fashion and reports to the nurse in charge upon arrival and departure.
Performs messenger duties for interdepartmental needs, answers phones, and transports patients by wheelchair and stretcher.
Utilizes aseptic techniques appropriately, identifies and reports breaks in aseptic technique to the RN.
Surgically scrubs for OBS and GYN procedures.
Sets up tables and prepares rooms for OBS procedures in LDRs and delivery rooms.
Prepares patients for delivery in LDRs.
Cleans instruments and equipment for sterilization, wrapping and labeling as indicated.
Checks sterile equipment for expiration dates.
Ensures sufficient sterile supplies and instruments are available on the unit.
Transports stillborn to the morgue as required.
Strips patients' beds and prepares beds, stretchers, and delivery tables for new admissions.
Receives patient report and assignment from the RN in charge.
Makes rounds on assigned post-partum patients and answers call lights.
Offers oral hygiene, clears overbed tables, and prepares patients for meals.
Takes temperatures as directed.
Prepares patients for transport.
Provides bedpans, turns, and positions bed-bound patients, ensuring they are clean and dry.
Places utensils and supplies in bedside stands for discharged patients and transfers.
Orients new admissions, assists with undressing, obtains specimens, takes vital signs, and places monitoring straps on patients.
Assists with examinations and procedures as necessary.
Administers enemas and performs abdominal and perineal shaves when directed.
Measures and records first void specimens on post-partum patients and hourly outputs on post-cesarean section patients.
Assists patients with personal hygiene and administers pericare.
Provides baby care as needed.
Identifies and reports changes in patient status to the RN.
Stocks the labor and delivery area and admitting rooms daily with necessary supplies.
Makes unoccupied beds and stretchers, ensuring a pillow for each.
Maintains non-patient areas in a neat and orderly condition.
Ensures rolling equipment is clean.
Reports missing or damaged equipment and shortages to RNs.
Defrosts and cleans refrigerators.
Cleans closets, drawers, and equipment.
Stocks soap dispensers for hand scrubbing.
Performs related duties as required.
