About The Position

For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, and currently offers 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness. The WIC Program offers eligible participants food benefits for healthy foods together with nutrition counseling, health education, farmer’s market vouchers, breastfeeding support, referrals to health care providers, and social services. The program is dedicated to improving pregnancy outcomes. The goal is to assist to reduce the number of low birth weight in infants, to encourage breastfeeding, to support the growth and the development of infants and children. The Nutritionist II (Competent Professional Authority CPA) position is responsible to assess counsel/educate High Risk participants whose nutrition or health concerns require nutrition expertise. Consults with Qualified Nutritionists regarding High-Risk counseling.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or; Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR) or; Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate health-related field with at least six credit hours in nutrition or; Registered Nurse (RN) with Bachelor of Science in Nursing or one year of experience working as a Competent Professional Authority in WIC.
  • Bilingual required
  • Ability to travel through the five boroughs as needed.
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed (early morning appointments, evenings and Saturdays).

Responsibilities

  • Collect information for the nutrition assessment process.
  • Promote breastfeeding as the preferred infant feeding method.
  • Complete issuance of food packages that do not require medical documentation.
  • Provide and document participant-centered nutrition education (individual/family sessions and facilitated group discussions).
  • Provide referrals to health and social services and document follow-up.
  • Identify High Risk participants and consults with Qualified Nutritionist (QN).
  • Plan and evaluate participant-centered nutrition education.
  • Conduct a complete nutrition assessment, determine program eligibility and enroll participants.
  • Conduct a breastfeeding assessment, and provide participant-centered counseling which helps mother initiate breastfeeding, establish a milk supply, exclusively breastfeed and continue breastfeeding.
  • Address common breastfeeding concerns and issue breast pumps.
  • Assign and tailor all food packages.
  • Obtain signature for benefit issuance.
  • Review food benefits for whole family.
  • Add benefits to WIC account.
  • Provide and document participant-centered nutrition education (individual/family sessions or facilitated group discussions) for participants.
  • Implement, update and/or close participant care plans for participants with minimal nutrition or health concerns.
  • Track participants’ progress and document outcomes.
  • Identify and refer participants to Qualified Nutritionist (QN),when an issue or concern is beyond the staff person’s scope of practice.
