About The Position

Positions in this job family provide nutrition and dietary expertise along with nutrition assessment, education and counseling to individuals and groups at the local level. These positions are also responsible for the development, submission, and implementation of plans to provide nutrition education and services to clients within their service area. This is the leadership level of the job family, where employees are assigned responsibility for planning, directing, and coordinating comprehensive nutrition programs at the local level. These positions provide direct service to individuals and groups by conducting nutrition education classes and providing individual nutrition counseling; interacting with other public health programs; increasing community awareness and positive perception of public health and nutrition; and coordinating in-service training for other nutrition staff. These positions must supervise other nutritionists, including reviewing and assigning work, evaluating performance, approving leave, and initiating disciplinary actions, as well as performing related administrative functions. Responsibilities also include coverage of essential nutrition services for assigned area when nutritionist position vacancies occur. Additionally, this position may provide direction, technical guidance and supervision, or training to nutrition assistants.

Requirements

  • Nutrition Therapist I: Holds a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree in the field of nutrition from an accredited college or university.
  • Nutrition Therapist II: Consists of registration as a dietitian or dietitian nutritionist (RD or RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and licensure or provisional licensure with the Oklahoma State board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.
  • Nutrition Therapist III: Consists of registration as a dietitian or dietitian nutritionist (RD or RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration and licensure with the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision plus two years of experience as a registered dietitian.
  • Nutrition Therapist IV: Consists of registration as a dietitian or dietitian nutritionist (RD or RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration and licensure with the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision plus four years of experience as a registered dietitian.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • If education, certification or licensure is required to meet qualifications, applicants must provide documentation at the time of application.

This level requires enhanced knowledge and skills in nutrition therapy and application; advanced knowledge of available health programs and resources; of federal and state program rules and regulations; of principles and methods of teaching; of program policies and procedure.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of current dietetics, nutritional science, and institutional diet management; of nutrition and its relationship to health; of available community resources; of administrative principles and practices, program planning, and nutrition education techniques; and of fundamental supervisory principles and practices. Skills to communicate effectively both orally and in writing are required in this position, as well as enhanced knowledge and skills in nutrition therapy and application; advanced knowledge of available health programs and resources; of federal and state program rules and regulations; of nutrition or lactation practices; and of principles and methods of teaching. Ability is required to prepare and present nutrition education information in an individual and group setting; to develop, plan, and implement effective education programs and to evaluate results of programs; to demonstrate effective leadership qualities; to display professionalism and successfully manage conflict; and to promote a supportive work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in public health with a major in nutrition or a master’s degree with an emphasis on nutrition may substitute for one year of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct and indirect nutrition education services.
  • Evaluates and assesses the nutritional status and needs of patients/clients and develops individual care plans (ICP)
  • Provides and/or oversees nutrition/dietary prescriptions and coordinates with health care providers as appropriate.
  • Refers patients/clients to other health-related and social services, as necessary.
  • Documents ICP, referrals, and follow-up to referrals appropriately
  • Provides nutrition in-service training to staff.
  • Provides community awareness and/or outreach in regard to public health and nutrition.
  • Being present at the office is an essential function of the job.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and supports mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  • Works effectively in team environment, participating and assisting their peers.
