The Nursing Assistant (NA) assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients, including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders, and ambulation. This role involves measuring and documenting vital signs and patient data, accurately recording information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and performing purposeful rounding. The NA participates in patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring patient comfort and safety by keeping call lights within reach and responding promptly. They are responsible for collecting specimens, maintaining nursing area stock, and cleaning equipment. The position requires performing patient positioning and transporting duties, assisting with nutritional needs, and maintaining skin integrity. Depending on unit requirements and under RN direction, tasks may include removing IVs, providing post-mortem care, and performing bladder scans. Adherence to infection prevention policies, including hand hygiene and aseptic procedures, is crucial. The NA must demonstrate knowledge of age-specific care needs and principles of growth and development.
