Nursing Assistant Emergency Department 24hr per week Evenings
About The Position
The Nursing Assistant works in the Emergency Department under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, providing basic patient care focused on patients’ personal needs, comfort, and safety. The role is scheduled for 24 hours per week on evenings, consisting of two 12-hour shifts. The Nursing Assistant provides care delegated by a Registered Nurse, including assistance with activities of daily living, collecting specimens, measuring and recording intake and output, taking and recording specified vital signs, supporting nutrition needs, and performing basic clinical procedures independently or under a nurse’s direct supervision. The role also supports patient safety, infection control, and departmental activities, and may assist with orientation of new Nursing Assistant colleagues. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and Basic Life Support certification. New hires or transfers have 30 days to obtain BLS certification. No prior experience is required. Staff must be vaccinated against influenza as a condition of employment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; new hires or transfers have 30 days to obtain certification.
- Basic ability to read, write, and perform basic four-function math.
- Ability to obtain knowledge of medical terminology, basic personal computer skills, and interpersonal skills.
- No prior experience required.
- Influenza vaccination is required as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities
- Provide patient care as delegated by a Registered Nurse and complete activities of daily living for assigned patients.
- Take and record vital signs, height and weight, and oxygen saturation; report unusual observations or patient reactions to the assigned nurse or charge nurse.
- Collect specimens for analysis and measure and record patient intake and output.
- Provide personal care and assist patients with activities of daily living.
- Perform basic clinical procedures independently or under a nurse’s direct supervision.
- Assist with patients’ nutritional needs, including ordering room service, setting up meal trays, and feeding patients as needed.
- Support a culture of safety and carry out safety interventions for patients.
- Follow applicable infection control policies and procedures.
- Assist as a patient safety attendant after completing the required competency.
- Assist with orientation of new Nursing Assistant colleagues.
- Perform additional unit-based activities and other duties as assigned or needed.
- Incorporate Lahey Clinic guiding principles, mission, and goals into daily activities and comply with organizational policies and department expectations.
- Maintain courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients, meet customer service standards, and participate in quality improvement activities and mandatory education.
