Nursing Assistant Post Partum
About The Position
Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Nursing Assistant assists in delivering patient care, including personal care, feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, moving and transporting patients, and changing linens. The position collects and documents vital signs and other patient observations. The role primarily supports the Postpartum and Newborn Nursery areas of The Mother Baby Center and floats to all areas of the center. This position is 0.5 FTE, or 40 hours per two-week pay period, with 8-hour day/evening shifts and an every-other-weekend rotation. The position is represented by the SEIU union.
Requirements
- Meet one of the following age or education requirements: be at least 18 years old, or be 17 years old with a high school diploma or GED.
- Meet one of the following patient-care education or experience requirements: successfully complete a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program; complete one semester of clinical rotations within an accredited nursing program; complete the Allina Health Nursing Assistant Academy Program; or have previous direct patient-care experience.
- Meet one of the following BLS requirements: current certification from the American Heart Association, current certification from the American Red Cross, or completion of Allina in-house BLS training within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to lift up to 32 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently.
Responsibilities
- Perform assigned personal care and interventions according to the critical elements of each procedure.
- Respond promptly to call lights for assigned and other patients.
- Distribute and set up water, snacks, and patient trays, and assist patients with them.
- Assist patients with grooming and hygiene, skin integrity, personal comfort, and population-specific needs.
- Assist with ambulation, transfers, positioning, and range of motion according to activity orders and patient needs.
- Carry out fall-prevention activities specified in the plan of care.
- Collect and save specimens.
- Assist the RN with admission, transfer, discharge, and post-mortem care.
- May transport medications within the site, excluding controlled substances.
- Observe, collect, and document patient health-status data, including measurements such as temperature, radial pulse, blood pressure, respirations, weight, and intake and output.
- Immediately report observations or health-status data outside normal limits or significant changes to the RN.
- Document according to documentation guidelines.
- Contribute to a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Protect patients, self, and others from injury during transfers, lifts, and transports by using proper equipment and body mechanics.
- Report environmental risks and equipment malfunctions to a supervisor.
- Use equipment according to policies, procedures, and manufacturer directions or standards.
- May handle hazardous waste, including identifying, segregating, and disposing of it; ensuring container integrity; and knowing spill, fire, and evacuation response procedures.
