About The Position

Part-time position on the 5 Pavilion Medical Telemetry unit at UPMC Shadyside, a Magnet-designated teaching hospital with ongoing research and education. Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians provide routine patient care and departmental support in accordance with established policies and procedures, under the direction of nurses and/or physicians. Duties may include activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients), blood glucose testing, vital signs, simple dressings, EKGs, bladder scans, and specimen collection. UPMC offers an inpatient Patient Care Support Career Ladder with opportunities for continued growth and advancement. Title and salary are determined by education and patient care experience; the stated starting pay for a Nursing Assistant is $19.40. Patient Care Support training is required for all Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians. Skills are assessed on the first day to determine individual training needs; candidates should plan for three full training days, Monday through Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Requirements

Successful completion of a UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program, or successful completion of a UPMC Patient Care Technician class.
Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
High school diploma or equivalent for the Nursing Assistant role.
For the Patient Care Technician role: high school diploma or equivalent, and one year of healthcare experience; or completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing or PT/OT/PA program or related health care training; or a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
For the Patient Care Technician - Senior role: high school diploma or equivalent, and two years of healthcare experience; or one year of experience plus completion of at least one relevant clinical rotation or related health care training; or one year of experience and a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
For the Patient Care Technician - Senior role: annual completion of a professional contribution determined after hire and successful completion of the Senior training class.
Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
CPR is required within 30 days of hire and must meet AHA standards, including didactic instruction and skills demonstration.
Act 34 clearance.
Access to medications is limited to distributing medication to the nurse.

Nice To Haves
