About The Position

Provides direct patient care as directed by the RN, including all activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients. Maintains a safe and clean environment by completing safety checks, cleaning rooms and equipment, changing linens, and keeping hallways clear. Acquires and distributes supplies and equipment, orders supplies, stocks patient rooms, and performs messenger functions. Delivers nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes mail. Performs UPMC nursing core responsibilities for nursing assistants, including blood glucose monitoring, taking weights and vital signs, monitoring intake and output, specimen collection, and Foley care. Provides feedback to the RN on patient care and reports changes in patient status. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per protocol. Demonstrates effective communication, understanding of cultural diversity, and commitment to workplace safety. Contributes to unit activities, documents in the medical record, and complies with safety policies. Responds to emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role and provides one-on-one patient supervision as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • Work permit required if under 18 years of age.

  • Strictly adheres to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital-related information.
  • Responds within the scope of the nursing assistant role to emergent situations.
  • Provides companionship/supervision one-on-one with patients as required.
  • Performs ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients).
  • Performs point of care testing (including blood glucose).
  • Performs telemetry monitor application/reapplication.
  • Performs Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) & patient safety indicator prevention.
  • Performs urine specimen collection.
  • Performs restraint placement and removal.
  • Performs ticket to ride (intra-hospital transportation).
