About The Position

Join UPMC Shadyside’s Surgical Team as a Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician. This full-time position involves 36 hours per week with rotating 12-hour shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends. You will work on the 3 Main Surgical Cardiothoracic Stepdown unit, a 38-bed post-operative care unit specializing in thoracic surgery recovery and serving as Shadyside’s surgical stepdown unit. The unit handles high-acuity patients undergoing procedures such as minimally invasive esophagectomy and lobe resections, as well as interventional cardiac cases. Title and salary will be determined based on education and patient care experience. A three-day in-person training program (7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Tuesday – Thursday) is required for candidates without specific transferable inpatient/hospital experience or a completed nursing student clinical rotation.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program or Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Nursing Assistant: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Patient Care Technician: High school diploma or equivalent. 1 year of healthcare experience, OR completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing or PT/OT/PA program or related health care training, OR completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in a health sciences field.
  • Patient Care Technician – Senior: High school diploma or equivalent. 2 years of healthcare experience, OR 1 year of experience plus completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing or PT/OT/PA program or related health care training, OR 1 year of experience and completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in a health sciences field.
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire.
  • Successful completion of Senior training class.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

Responsibilities
