About The Position

Provides direct patient care as directed by the RN, including all activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients. Maintains a safe and clean environment by completing safety checks, cleaning patient rooms and equipment, changing linens, and keeping hallways clear. Acquires and distributes supplies and equipment, performs messenger functions, orders supplies, and stocks patient rooms and unit supply areas. Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes mail. Performs UPMC nursing core responsibilities including blood glucose monitoring, taking weights and vital signs, monitoring intake and output, collecting specimens, and Foley care. Provides feedback to the RN on patient care and reports changes in patient status. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per protocol. The role also involves constructive feedback reception, identifying learning needs, and participating in self-review. Demonstrates clear communication, understanding of cultural diversity, and workplace safety. Develops productive working relationships, suggests and supports departmental changes, and assumes responsibility for assignments. Assures equipment malfunctions are reported and establishes effective communication strategies. Contributes to universal unit activities like responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Provides diversional activities to prevent restraint use, documents in the medical record, and completes clerical functions. Complies with safety policies, including standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen exposure procedures. Strictly adheres to patient care and hospital information policies. Responds to emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role and provides one-on-one companionship/supervision as required. Additional core responsibilities include ADLs, point of care testing, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC and patient safety indicator prevention, urine specimen collection, restraint placement and removal, and ticket to ride (intra-hospital transportation).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 34 clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • Work permit required if under 18 years of age.
