The Nursing Assistant ICU assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This role involves direct patient care activities such as bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, and assisting with mobility. The Nursing Assistant also monitors and documents vital signs, intake and output, and other patient data, accurately recording information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). They perform purposeful rounding, communicate patient needs to the RN, and assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges. Responsibilities include ensuring patient call lights are within reach and answered promptly, collecting specimens, and performing point-of-care testing. The role also involves maintaining nursing area stock, cleaning equipment, and performing patient positioning and transporting duties that require physical exertion. Additional tasks include assisting with nutritional needs, maintaining skin integrity, providing special patient supplies, and potentially performing tasks like removing IVs, providing post-mortem care, and bladder scans under RN direction. The Nursing Assistant must adhere to infection prevention policies, including hand hygiene and aseptic techniques, and demonstrate knowledge of age-specific care for all patient populations served.
