About The Position

The Float Pool Nursing Assistant (CNA) will demonstrate competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards. This role involves providing personal care, assisting with procedures, monitoring patients, and maintaining a safe environment. The position requires implementing admission, transfer, and discharge procedures, utilizing effective communication and interpersonal skills, and participating in maintaining supplies and unit cleanliness. The Nursing Assistant will also focus on self-growth and accountability, ensuring competency in complex care activities and contributing to unit quality scores. This role requires floating between multiple Atrium Health Floyd locations based on staffing needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to communicate with patients, staff, and coworkers.
  • Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity.
  • Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
  • Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics.
  • Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds.
  • Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly.
  • Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds.
  • Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors.
  • Completion of required CPR training as defined by organization.

Nice To Haves

  • BLS, CPI
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • One year of experience taking care of patients and dealing with the public preferred.
  • Completion of Preceptor training and serving in Preceptor role.
  • Glucose monitoring and quality control checks.
  • Respiratory Care including tracheostomy care, suctioning, etc.
  • Dressing changes
  • Monitoring chest and other drainage tubes and levels, reporting deviations
  • Procedure/Equipment set-up
  • Assembling, administering, monitoring tube feedings

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards, including personal care, pre- and post-op/procedure care, post-mortem care, patient in restraints, placement of electrodes for monitoring, assisting with ambulation and exercise, care for patients with infectious diseases, correct positioning, patient transfers, and transportation.
  • Demonstrates competency in skin care protocols and care.
  • Accurately performs/documents intake/output, vital signs, weights, and other monitoring, including computerized charting.
  • Promptly notifies nurse of abnormal vital signs, observations, physical complaints, etc.
  • Assists in identifying patients at risk for falls and preventing falls.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for the patient, including correct handling of body fluids and appropriate cleaning of equipment.
  • Demonstrates utilization of proper body mechanics and appropriate lift techniques/resources.
  • Performs glucose monitoring via fingerstick.
  • Implements admission, transfer, and discharge procedures, according to AHF/unit standards, including assisting with timely procedures, providing explanations of the environment, accurately recording information, collecting and forwarding personal belongings, assuring unused equipment is cleaned/removed, and utilizing the discharge process.
  • Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal skills, ensuring timely and appropriate communication of patient/family issues, establishing therapeutic relationships, utilizing appropriate lines of authority, maintaining confidentiality, demonstrating effective conflict resolution skills, and demonstrating awareness of satisfaction issues.
  • Demonstrates competence in time management and prioritization, teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking, organization of work and environment, and timely response to patient/nurse needs and requests.
  • Participates in maintaining supplies, equipment, and unit cleanliness, including maintaining a neat appearance, restocking supplies, reporting malfunctioning equipment, ensuring appropriate charges are made, properly handling/storing/cleaning equipment, and efficiently using supplies, linen, and dietary items.
  • Demonstrates self-growth/accountability by participating in quality assurance and PI activities, attending unit meetings, maintaining awareness of policy changes, verbalizing how their job supports organizational goals, demonstrating cultural commitments, assuring competency maintenance, and complying with unit-specific expectations.
  • Demonstrates competency in all required complex care activities within their home units, which may include preceptor training, glucose monitoring, respiratory care, CPR training, dressing changes, monitoring drainage tubes, procedure/equipment set-up, and administering tube feedings.
  • Assists in achieving unit quality scores which meet or exceed hospital/national average for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
