About The Position

The Float Pool Nursing Assistant (CNA) will demonstrate competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards. This role involves providing personal care, assisting with pre- and post-operative procedures, patient transfers, transportation, and monitoring vital signs. The position also requires accurate documentation, effective communication, and participation in maintaining a safe and clean environment. The Float Pool CNA will be expected to float between various Atrium Health Floyd locations, including Floyd Medical Center, Polk Medical Center, Floyd Behavioral Health, Floyd Cherokee Medical Center, and the Trion Freestanding ED, based on staffing needs. This role is crucial in ensuring quality patient care across different units and facilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to communicate with patients, staff, and coworkers.
  • Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity.
  • Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
  • Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics.
  • Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds.
  • Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly.
  • Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds.
  • Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors.

Nice To Haves

  • BLS, CPI
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • One year of experience taking care of patients and dealing with the public preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards, including personal care, pre- and post-op/procedure care, post-mortem care, patient in restraints, placement of electrodes for monitoring, assisting with ambulation and exercise, care for patients with infectious diseases, correct positioning, transfers, and transportation of patients.
  • Demonstrates competency in skin care protocols and care.
  • Accurately performs/documents intake/output, vital signs, weights, and other monitoring, including computerized charting.
  • Promptly notifies the nurse of abnormal vital signs, observations, physical complaints, etc.
  • Assists in identifying patients at risk for falls and preventing falls.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for the patient, including correct handling of body fluids and appropriate cleaning of equipment between patients.
  • Demonstrates utilization of proper body mechanics and appropriate lift techniques/resources.
  • Performs glucose monitoring via fingerstick.
  • Implements admission, transfer, and discharge procedures according to AHF/unit standards, including assisting with timely procedures, providing explanations of the physical environment, accurately recording information, collecting and forwarding personal belongings, assuring cleaning/removal of unused equipment, and utilizing the discharge process.
  • Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal skills, assuring timely and appropriate communication of patient/family issues, establishing therapeutic relationships, utilizing appropriate lines of authority, maintaining confidentiality, demonstrating effective conflict resolution skills, and demonstrating awareness of satisfaction issues.
  • Demonstrates competence in time management and prioritization, teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking, organization of work and environment, and timely response to patient/nurse needs and requests.
  • Participates in maintaining supplies, equipment, and unit cleanliness, including maintaining a neat appearance of patient areas, restocking supplies, reporting broken equipment, ensuring appropriate charges are made, properly handling/storing/cleaning equipment, and efficiently using supplies, linen, and dietary items.
  • Demonstrates self-growth/accountability by participating in quality assurance and PI activities, attending unit meetings, maintaining awareness of policy changes, verbalizing how their job supports organizational goals, demonstrating cultural commitments, assuring competency maintenance, and complying with unit-specific expectations.
  • Demonstrates competency in all required complex care activities within their home units as determined by unit need, which may include preceptor training, glucose monitoring, respiratory care, CPR training, dressing changes, monitoring drainage tubes, procedure/equipment set-up, and administering tube feedings.
  • Assists in achieving unit quality scores which meet or exceed hospital/national average for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
