About The Position

An Administrative Supervisor is a Registered Nurse who works with a diverse group of professionals and functions within the Nursing Organizational structure. The Administrative Supervisor is involved in every aspect of the care delivery system. He/She has responsibilities to plan, direct, control, coordinate and implement policies and procedures, and/or programs relative to unit operations and nursing services. The Administrative Supervisor is responsible for management of assigned unit(s) off tours, acts as an Administrative liaison between Administrator on-call and the staff; related to nursing service problems on assigned weekends, holidays and off tours.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited school of Nursing.
  • Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in New York State.
  • Minimum of three (3) years nursing experience including one year in a leadership position.
  • Course in Nursing specialty and supervision.
  • Demonstrated competence as a nursing practitioner.
  • BLS, ACLS, are required certification within (3) months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or closely related degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively directs the daily operations of the Nursing Department on respective tour and monitors nursing practices that would maintain departmental goals and standards.
  • Consistently aids in assigning staff members in accordance with their clinical competence to meet job expectation.
  • Appropriately allocates and schedules staff within available resources to carry out the responsibilities of the units within the assigned shift.
  • Implements or monitors standards of care.
  • Evaluates the quality of patient care provided on the unit by making patient rounds for direct observation of patient care and monitoring documentation of nursing care as well as verbal communication about nursing care.
  • Demonstrates analytic abilities necessary to identify problems and implement/facilitate appropriate solutions in collaboration with Nursing Directors and the staffing office personnel.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and implementing activities with Nursing Administration, and other disciplines.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Directors in developing and evaluating nursing personnel/on assigned tour.
  • Interprets philosophy, goals, policies and procedures for personnel, patient/family and others.
  • Consistently demonstrates the ability to utilize all available resources in order to maximize patient care outcomes.
  • Demonstrates good organizational skills in carrying out work schedule.
  • Maintains effective channels of communication, written/oral, electronic, inter and intra-departmentally in a timely fashion to promote smooth flow of departmental activities.
  • Monitors a safe working environment, promptly reports any accidents or unsafe conditions. Implements preventive and corrective action as necessary.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the job description and key requirements for each position in the department.
  • Functions as a role model in all aspects of the professional role.
  • Takes immediate emergency action that is in the best interest of the hospital in the absence of the hospital administrator and communicates such action to the administrator on-call, SVP of Nursing, and VP of Nursing Operations as soon as possible.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage staff’s lateness and absenteeism within the limitation of established policy and procedure.
  • Participates in counseling/advisement of staff members as necessary, and follows Labor Relation guidelines in disciplining staff.
  • Monitors use of supplies, equipment and identifies potential savings through the appropriate use or substitution of products.
  • Provides on-going educational or learning opportunities to facilitate growth and development of staff or changes in roles/responsibilities.
  • Orients and develops new staff assigned to shift.
  • Consistently meets professional standards and regulatory agency requirements. Responds to JCAHO, NYSHD, DOH/CMS, IPRO, TITLE XVII and/or other regulatory agency deficiencies.
  • Participates in providing relevant experiences for nursing student affiliates, if applicable.
  • Identifies own learning needs, by setting goals for continuing education, and professional development; by attending one seminar/conference yearly and/or participating in one unit initiative.
  • Consistently improves practice including but not limited to changes in hospital or professional trends and current literature.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet schedules and adapt to changes.
  • Promote a safe, cooperative and professional health care environment to ensure optimum patient care (as per HR Policy 113c).
  • Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures, rules and regulations, including but not limited to, absenteeism, etime, cellular telephone usage, dress code and rules of conduct.
  • Makes customer service a priority, treating customers (patients, visitors, and co-workers) in a professional manner exercising courtesy and tact. Effectively communicates with patients and others about SBH services in their area(s) of expertise or responsibility and ensures that concerns, questions or issues reach the right person(s) in SBH in a timely fashion.
  • Complies with St. Barnabas attendance policies.
  • Observes hospital code of conduct and dress code.
  • Conforms to policies governing patient abuse, patient rights, and confidentiality of information.
