The Nurse Tech works in the 24-bed Prep/Recovery unit at Meijer Heart Center, preparing and recovering inpatient and outpatient patients undergoing catheterization and electrophysiology procedures. The unit cares for patients across electrophysiology, diagnostic and interventional cardiology, structural heart, and peripheral procedures, as well as heart and lung transplant patients. Most outpatients are discharged the same day and receive care from the same staff from arrival through discharge. The unit operates from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has a fast pace, including in-hospital patient transport performed by the unit team. Nurse Technicians act as team members in delivering quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role includes opportunities to develop skills in IV starts, time management, vascular access site management, and removal of femoral arterial and venous sheaths, including management of the site to achieve hemostasis. The role requires attendance at three to four pre-scheduled weekday classroom days with Nurse Educators during the first week of work, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flexibility with scheduling and attendance at required orientation classes outside the regular core schedule are necessary.
