The Nurse Tech works on 4 West, a medical-surgical unit at Butterworth Hospital, caring for patients with a variety of conditions, primarily hospitalist medicine diagnoses such as pneumonia, sepsis, cellulitis, kidney failure, and hyperglycemia. The unit provides opportunities to develop acute care skills in a high-acuity hospital setting and is supported by a collaborative nursing and interdisciplinary team that includes hospitalists, care managers, social workers, pharmacy, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Provider, the Nurse Tech acts as a team member in delivering quality patient care, performs basic skills according to department guidelines, and communicates observations to the health care team. CNA certification is not required because the role includes extensive orientation and on-the-job training. Orientation includes three to four scheduled weekday classroom sessions with Nurse Educators during the first week of work, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nurses and technicians on the unit can self-schedule shifts. This is a part-time night-shift role scheduled for 24 hours per week, generally from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., with variable days and every other weekend.
