The Medical ICU is a 24-bed unit located on the 8th floor of the Meijer Heart Center within Butterworth Hospital. This unit cares for critically ill patients, specializing in the care of medically complex patients including those with diabetes, ketoacidosis, those requiring mechanical ventilation, critically ill bone marrow transplant patients, and those with sepsis and pneumonia. The unit has been completely renovated to become a new MICU, offering a unique experience. The Meijer Heart Center focuses on expert care for heart and vascular systems, offering a continuum of care from monitoring to advanced procedures like bypass surgery, vascular surgery, and heart and lung transplants. They advance heart and vascular care through research, innovative treatments, and best practices. Nursing Technicians in the ICU support nurses and ancillary staff in providing care for patients requiring ventilator support, life-sustaining titratable medications (including cardiac and sedation medications), and assist with bedside procedures such as preparing the sterile field for tracheostomies, central line placement, and dressing changes. The ICU is a fast-paced, team-oriented environment that relies on an interdisciplinary approach. Responsibilities include checking blood sugars, vitals, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization, and acting as a safety attendant. Accurate and timely documentation is essential. Nurse Techs may also be floated to other departments of higher need with similar training.
