The Prince Surgical Critical Care Unit is a 22-bed intensive care unit located in the Meijer Heart Center at Butterworth Hospital. This surgical ICU specializes in the care of critically ill trauma and surgical patients, including geriatric rib fractures, traumatic brain injury, multi-trauma, and adult burn patients. The surgical population includes trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, surgical oncology, and vascular surgery. The unit also provides care for medical and neuro critically ill patients, and supports the Neuro ICU team. The work is challenging and fulfilling, with typically two Nurse Techs working on the night shift team. Nursing Technicians support nurses and ancillary staff in providing care to patients requiring ventilator support, life-sustaining medications (cardiac and sedation), and assist with bedside procedures such as tracheostomies, central line placement, and burn dressing changes. This fast-paced unit relies on teamwork and an interdisciplinary approach. This is a direct patient care role involving taking vitals, checking blood sugar, wound care, bed bathing, toileting, ambulating, catheterization, acting as a safety attendant, and potentially postmortem care.
