About The Position
The Medical ICU is a 24-bed unit within the Meijer Heart Center, specializing in the care of critically ill patients. This includes patients with diabetes, ketoacidosis, those requiring mechanical ventilation, bone marrow transplant patients, and those with sepsis and pneumonia. The unit has been completely renovated and offers a unique experience in a brand-new critical care setting. The Meijer Heart Center provides a continuum of heart and vascular care, from monitoring to advanced surgeries and transplants, driven by research, innovative treatments, and best practices. Nursing Technicians in the ICU support nurses and ancillary staff in providing care for patients requiring ventilator support, life-sustaining medications, and assist with bedside procedures. The ICU is a fast-paced, team-oriented environment that collaborates with providers and ancillary staff. Responsibilities include checking blood sugars, vitals, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization, and acting as a safety attendant. Accurate and timely documentation is essential. Nurse Techs may also be floated to other departments with similar training if there is a higher need.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
- 1 year of patient care experience is strongly preferred
- Flexibility with availability
Responsibilities
- Support nurses and other ancillary staff in providing competent care of patients requiring ventilator support.
- Administer life-sustaining titratable medications including cardiac and sedation medications.
- Assist with bedside procedures including preparation of the sterile field for tracheostomies, central line placement, and dressing changes.
- Check blood sugars.
- Take vitals.
- Perform bed bathing.
- Assist with ambulation.
- Perform wound care.
- Perform catheterization.
- Act as a safety attendant for patients.
- Ensure that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
- May be floated to other departments of higher need with similar training.
