About The Position

Provides high quality nursing care for assigned patients in a scientific and humanistic focus. The Newly Licensed Registered Nurse (NLRN) utilizes a holistic systems approach to protect and promote client wellness and safety in the physiological, psychological, social cultural, developmental, and spiritual domains. Nursing interventions are interdisciplinary, age specific and are directed toward optimal wellness.

Requirements

Graduate of a Diploma, Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
Passed the state board examination by the New York State Board of Nursing before beginning employment.
Demonstrate completion of a BSN program within 5 years of hire (for graduates of Diploma or Associate Degree programs or those with a non-Nursing Bachelor’s Degree).
Successfully complete a medication and IV challenge examination, as outlined by the hospital within the orientation period.
Maintain CPR certification.
Registered nurses with less than one year’s experience must be hired through the Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Residency Program.
May not be hired directly into an open position on any specific unit if they have less than one year of experience.

Responsibilities

Collects data and information relative to the healthcare consumer’s health or the situation, involving patient, family, and other healthcare providers in holistic data collection.
Determines priority of data collections by the patient’s immediate condition or anticipated needs.
Reviews patient record daily including physician progress notes, laboratory values and nurses’ notes.
Documents data in a retrievable format.
Utilizes evidence-based assessment techniques and resources to identify patterns and variances.
Protects the privacy of collected data based on hospital policies.
Fulfills professional role expectations and requirements, sharing knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues.
Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning by assessing and identifying personal learning needs and developing a plan to maintain skills and competence.
Participates in performance improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice and in the healthcare delivery system.
Participates in efforts to minimize costs and unnecessary duplication in patient care.
Analyzes assessment data to determine actual or potential diagnoses, problems, and issues.
Identifies actual and/or potential risks to health and safety, as well as barriers to health.
Verifies the diagnosis, problems or issues with patient, family and other healthcare providers and prioritizes them based on mutually established goals.
Documents problems in a manner that facilitates the determination of the expected outcomes and plan.
Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the healthcare consumer or the situation, developing outcomes involving the patient, family and other healthcare providers when possible and appropriate.
Develops a plan of care and identified priorities with the patient, family and interprofessional team which is individualized, holistic and evidence based.
Advocates for responsible and appropriate use of interventions to minimize suffering.
Priorities and modifies the plan based on assessment findings and other outcome indicators.
Documents the plan using standard language/terminology.
Implements the identified plan, partnering with the patient and family to implement the plan in a manner which is safe, effective, efficient, timely, patient centered and equitable.
Demonstrates caring behaviors to develop therapeutic relationships.
Collaborates with the interprofessional team to implement the plan and coordinates the coordination of care.
Provides care across the lifespan which is congruent, holistic and focuses on the needs of the patient while advocating for identified diverse needs.
Utilizes evidence-based interventions to achieve mutual goals and outcomes specific to the problem or need.
Integrates critical thinking and technology solutions into the implementation of the nursing process to enhance outcomes.
Delegates appropriately while maintaining accountability for care.
Documents implementation and any modifications, including changes or omissions, for the identified plan.
Coordinates care delivery, organizing the plan.
Collaborates with the patient and manages their mutually agreed upon outcomes.
Engages the patient in self-care to achieve preferred quality of life.
Communicates with the patient, interprofessional team and community-based resources to ensure safe transitions in care.
Advocates for dignified and holistic care by the team.
Documents coordination of care.
Provides opportunity to the patient to identify health teaching and health promotion needs.
Utilizes health teaching and health promotion methods to meet the varied needs of patients and evaluates their effectiveness.
Uses technology to communicate health promotion and disease prevention to patients and provides them with information about potential adverse effects of their plan of care.
Provides anticipatory guidance to patients to promote health and reduce the risk of negative health outcomes.
Evaluates progress toward the attainment of goals and outcomes, conducting ongoing evaluations which are holistic, systematic and criterion based, in collaboration with the patient and interprofessional team.
Works with the patient and interprofessional team to determine the patient-centeredness, effectiveness, efficiency, safety, timeliness and equitability of the plan and attainment of outcomes.
Revises the diagnoses, outcomes, plan, and implementation strategies based on ongoing assessment data.
Communicates the evaluation and conclusion of the plan to the patient and other key stakeholders.
Documents the results of the outcomes.
Performs nursing care in compliance with nursing standards of practice, standards of professional performance, the American Nurses’ Association Code of Ethics for Nurses and the organization’s policies and procedures.
Supports the philosophy of Corning Hospital Department of Nursing.
Reports and documents accurately change in patients’ condition and response to nursing care.
Demonstrates competence in both identification of an emergency situation and in initiating appropriate plan of action safely and effectively using emergency equipment.
Delegates responsibilities to other staff members and ancillary personnel during an emergency.
Demonstrates procedures and interprets policy to other members of the healthcare team.
Assumes leadership responsibility when appropriate.
Participates in the planning and presentation of educational programs. (Clinical Ladders Nurses)
Other duties may be assigned as necessary in the performance of this position.
