About The Position

The Research Nurse Abstractor is a crucial role that bridges bedside patient care and data science. This professional is responsible for reviewing patient medical records to extract, translate, and enter vital clinical information into research databases. The primary goal of this position is to ensure that clinical studies and registries have accurate, clean, and complete medical data for comprehensive analysis.

Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN is highly preferred).
  • Must hold an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • A minimum of 2+ years of direct clinical nursing experience or prior clinical research and/or registry abstractor experience.
  • Advanced understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
  • Specifically, AIS coding, and ICD coding are required.
  • High proficiency with computer programs, Electronic Health Records (EHR), and database management tools (e.g., Oracle-based data entry and DoD Trauma Registry) is strongly desired).
  • Strong capacity to work independently with minimal supervision, exhibiting high-level critical thinking and exceptional analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Must strictly adhere to DoD and HIPAA guidelines to ensure the protection and confidentiality of patient health information.
  • Ensure all data handling and research activities strictly align with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards.
  • Diligently follow the exact rules of individual research studies and designated regulatory bodies.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.

  • Highly recommended credentials to demonstrate expertise include the Certified Clinical Research Coordinator (CCRC) or the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA).
  • The Abstractor may specialize in specific clinical areas, such as Trauma, Orthopedic, Traumatic Brain Injury, or Infectious disease.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical trial support, registry data entry, and health trends evaluation.
  • A non-bedside, heavily computer-based role focused on the detailed review of medical charts, laboratory results, and physician notes.
  • Requires high attention to detail to thoroughly read complex patient histories in medical files and record exact data points with precision.
  • Provide input to principal investigators, program managers, data scientists, and other professional research staff to support the establishment of a clinical database (i.e., VALOR: VA-linked health records to DoD Trauma patients), data dictionary, and other key elements that support consistent and accurate records abstraction.
  • Analyze patient charts to identify specific clinical variables, treatments, and outcomes.
  • Accurately input clinical details into secure Electronic Health Records (EHR) and specialized trial databases.
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, Principal Investigators (PIs), and trial coordinators to resolve data gaps, discrepancies, or errors.
  • Generate summary reports of data metrics to track and measure clinical trial progress or overall hospital performance.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
