The Nurse Quality Manager serves as a technical advisor to management and staff on the principles and techniques of quality management. This role has responsibility and accountability for the development, effective implementation, compliance, sustainment, and monitoring of the Quality Management System (QMS) program within the department. The position supports undergraduate/graduate medical education quality initiatives, simulation-related research opportunities, and departmental leadership directives. The Nurse Quality Manager embraces continuous quality improvement (CQI) and directly supports the evaluation, assessment, and implementation of CQI to ensure continued maintenance of accreditation by accrediting bodies such as the Society of Simulation in Healthcare and the American College of Surgeons. This role involves obtaining, analyzing, and reporting to department leadership on the effectiveness of simulation training on influencing hospital quality metrics through direct interface with the Quality Management Department. The position applies simulation educational techniques and practices to collect feedback and develop initiatives to improve QMS results, focusing on learner satisfaction and continuous process improvement. It also involves improving the measurement and reporting of critical quality management information and data for the Department of Simulation, identifying trends and opportunities for improvement, and participating in or leading strategies targeting these areas. The Nurse Quality Manager routinely reviews the QMS for adequacy and effectiveness and advises leadership on best educational directives to improve outcomes. This role implements, sustains, and evaluates quality processes by working internally and externally to develop efficiencies and best practices in simulation education. It also plans, leads, and/or facilitates various sessions, forums, and meetings to identify and solve problems with internal and external customers, developing and implementing solutions, monitoring progress, designing alternative initiatives, developing metrics, and assessing the need for appropriate resources. The position identifies and translates existing quality efforts into outcomes-based quality initiatives for the development and execution of simulation research and scholarly activities. The Nurse Quality Manager requires comprehensive knowledge of the center and consortium mission, policies, programs, goals, and management objectives to guide performance improvement efforts. Extensive knowledge of the Department’s structure, missions, programs, and organizational relationships is necessary, along with detailed knowledge of strategic and business planning goals and objectives, operational planning, and management and organizational principles and practices. The role requires the ability to make recommendations that significantly change or develop educational programs, and to communicate verbally and in writing to clearly express ideas, convey status and progress, report on analysis findings, and make recommendations to team members and leaders at all levels within the organization and to external customers and consultants. Analytical skills and techniques are needed to measure the effectiveness of educational programs, plan and coordinate tasks, processes, and programs, and measure the success of operational program execution. Knowledge of medical information management systems is also required.
