The Nurse Practitioner provides routine care and management for patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with a supervising physician and through standardized procedures. The role covers all NP classifications, including Levels I, II, and III. NPs may provide medical services only within their competence, education, training, and experience, under physician supervision. They must consult or refer to a collaborating physician when a task, procedure, or diagnostic problem exceeds their competence. Specific service, clinic, or department functions are established with supervising physicians and approved through the organization’s administrative and clinical governance processes. The NP evaluates and treats patients and addresses health-maintenance concerns related to the specialty; obtains histories and performs physical examinations; orders and evaluates diagnostic studies; and administers, orders, furnishes, and prescribes medications under written standardized procedures. The NP also coordinates care, provides patient and family education, supports quality improvement, and ensures compliance with applicable policies. After appropriate training, the NP may assist a supervising physician in the operating room. The position requires a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing and graduation from an accredited NP program, along with applicable RN and NP credentials and Basic Life Support certification. NPs must follow Stanford Health Care’s C-I-CARE standards for patient- and family-centered interactions.
