About The Position

This role involves providing comprehensive care for general surgical patients, including history and physical examinations, medical clearance, and serving as a surgical first assistant. The position requires collaboration with surgeons, residents, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care, from emergency room evaluations to post-operative follow-up in skilled nursing facilities. The individual will also be responsible for accurate documentation and billing, maintaining certifications, and adhering to hospital policies and values.

Requirements

Certified NP or Certified PA
2 years surgical experience
First assistant in OR preferred
ACLS certified within 3 months of position
BLS
US Department of Justice and Massachusetts’ Controlled Substance DEA Registrations are required for prescribing practitioners

Responsibilities

Perform history and physical examination on general surgical emergency patients upon decision for admission.
Ensure adequate medical clearance for general surgical pre-op patients by ordering the necessary consultations and testing.
Serve as surgical first assistant to general surgeon doing elective and emergency surgery.
Provide first line general surgical evaluation and treatment for patients in the emergency room that have already been evaluated by an emergency room physician.
Prepare patients for evaluation and treatment by an attending general surgeon if appropriate.
Collaborate with general surgical residents to avoid duplication of services.
Provide services for general surgical inpatients by responding to nurses’ calls and expediting discharges, completing documentation, etc. at the request of an attending surgeon as time allows.
Collaborate with the Hospital Physician Service physicians in coordinating general surgical emergency admissions and medical management of both pre- and post-op patients.
Coordinate functions with any other surgical PEs to avoid duplication or omission of services.
Provide post-operative care in local Skilled Nursing Facilities at the request of an attending surgeon including wound debridement, wound care, and education to staff, patient, and family as time allows.
Collaborate with Chief of General Surgery in coordinating his/her clinical services and defer to his decision regarding clinical priorities and assignment.
Collaborate with Chief of General Surgery and Chief Medical Officer of CCH on implementing and refining this position and defer to their decisions regarding programmatic and administrative priorities and assignment.
Maintain complete and accurate documentation of clinical work performed and complete billing encounter sheets on a timely basis.
Maintain all necessary certifications and CCH medical staff privileges as a surgical PE.
Collaborate closely with the attending surgeon (“immediate physician supervisor”) of the patient to whom he is providing services.

Communicate effectively and participate actively on the health care team.
