About The Position

University of Minnesota Physicians is seeking a Certified Nurse Practitioner or a Certified Physician Assistant to join our Critical Care service. This role involves providing inpatient care for critically ill patients in a hybrid capacity, splitting time between an intensive care unit and serving as a critical response provider. While part of the MHealth Fairview Critical Care system APP team, you will gain diverse experiences. Although there's potential to float between ICU services (including University SICU or MICU, FSH Med/Surg ICU, and West Bank ICU), each APP is primarily assigned to one ICU for the majority of their FTE. A strong interdisciplinary culture exists across all critical care services, whether at a teaching or non-teaching hospital. In both environments, you will collaborate closely with academic Critical Care physicians and experienced Advanced Practice Providers, managing patients with a wide range of urgent and emergent needs. Approximately 30% of shifts involve responding with the West Bank Rapid Response team, providing urgent and emergent evaluation and treatment for adult patients throughout the University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank. This includes inpatients (primarily orthopedic, med/psych, and maternal), acute/transitional rehabilitation patients, and inpatient psychiatric patients. You will work autonomously with telephone support and collaboration from off-site critical care attendings, making rapid assessment and treatment decisions aligned with current standards of care. Consultation with specialists and determination of appropriate patient care levels are key. Refined communication skills are essential for precise written and verbal handoffs. Required knowledge and skills include leading Code Blue, Rapid Response, and Stroke Code events, responding to sepsis alerts, utilizing closed-loop communication, managing simulation codes, understanding dual diagnosis mental health and medical conditions, and willingness to obtain relevant procedure privileges. The PA or NP functions as an experienced member of the healthcare team, utilizing advanced practice skills under physician supervision/collaboration to provide comprehensive adult healthcare. This includes independent decision-making regarding healthcare needs, physical and psychological assessments, patient education, ordering and interpreting diagnostic procedures, and managing acute and chronic conditions to ensure continuity of care.
