About The Position

University of Minnesota Physicians is seeking a Certified Nurse Practitioner or a Certified Physician Assistant to join our Critical Care service. This role involves providing inpatient care for critically ill patients in a hybrid capacity, splitting time between an intensive care unit and serving as a critical response provider. While working on the MHealth Fairview Critical Care system APP team, you will gain diverse experiences. You may float between ICU services, including University SICU or MICU, FSH Med/Surg ICU, and West Bank ICU, with a primary ICU assignment for the majority of your FTE. A strong interdisciplinary culture exists across all critical care services, whether at a teaching or non-teaching hospital. You will collaborate closely with academic Critical Care physicians and experienced Advanced Practice Providers, managing patients with a wide range of urgent and emergent needs. Approximately 30% of your shifts will involve responding with the West Bank Rapid Response team, providing urgent and emergent response and evaluation for adult patients throughout the University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank. This includes inpatients (primarily orthopedic, med/psych, and maternal), acute/transitional rehabilitation patients, and inpatient psychiatric patients. You will work autonomously with telephone support and collaboration from off-site critical care attendings, making rapid assessment and treatment decisions aligned with current standards of care. Consultation with specialists and determination of appropriate patient care levels are key. Refined communication skills are essential for precise written and verbal handoffs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and formal Adult Practitioner training program or a graduate of an accredited Physician's Assistant program.
  • Current MN RN license and be approved or eligible by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for prescription writing privileges or a current PA license with prescriptive authority through the MN Board of Medical Practice.
  • Certified through ANCC/AANP or eligible for ANCC/AANP national exam or through the NCCPA and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as an inpatient PA or NP.
  • Hospitalist or Critical Care provider experience is preferred.
  • New graduates with > 5 years prior inpatient critical care experience as an RN will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient care for critically ill patients in a hybrid role between an intensive care unit and as a critical response provider.

  • Make rapid assessment and treatment decisions in accordance with American Heart Association, Neurocritical Care Society and current standards of care.
  • Consult specialists as appropriate, and determine and facilitate patients receiving appropriate level of care.
  • Lead Code Blue, Rapid Response, Stroke Code.
  • Respond to sepsis alerts and treat per protocol.
  • Utilize closed loop communication in all interactions.
  • Manage and perform simulation codes for a variety of staff and environments.
  • Provide comprehensive health care services to patients.
  • Engage in independent decision making about health care needs.
  • Provide physical and psychological health assessments, patient education and counseling.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic procedures.
  • Manage acute and chronic disease conditions ensuring continuity of care.
