About The Position

LA Health Services is seeking a Nurse-Midwife to join the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This role involves providing comprehensive care to mothers and babies throughout the maternity cycle (antepartanum, intrapartum, postpartum, and neonatal) for medically uncomplicated patients, as well as providing gynecological care, including family planning. The Nurse-Midwife will work under the administrative direction of supervising nurse-midwives and the medical direction of physicians, exercising independent judgment to manage routine pregnancy cases and determine when physician consultation is necessary. This position is part of LA County's integrated healthcare system, serving as a safety net for over 10 million residents.

Requirements

  • A current and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • A current and active certificate to practice as a Nurse-Midwife issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Required licenses and certificates must be active and unrestricted at the time of filing.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews patient charts and identifies abnormalities indicating anything other than a normal birth.
  • Obtains patient's medical history and performs evaluative obstetrical examinations, including vital signs, neurological reflexes, fetal heartbeat, uterine measurements, fetal position estimation, and breast/nipple examination.
  • Performs internal pelvic examinations to assess dilation, station, fetal position, and membrane condition.
  • Interprets obstetrical examination results and determines if physician consultation is indicated.
  • Draws blood and completes routine laboratory request forms.
  • Performs hematocrit analysis.
  • Manages patients during labor under standing physician orders, including starting IVs, administering medications, prepping patients, instructing in labor procedures, providing counseling, monitoring progress, and informing physicians of any issues.
  • Notifies a physician and transfers the patient to the delivery room when delivery is imminent.
  • Assists in the delivery room by providing emotional support and performing delivery procedures, including pudendal block, episiotomy, repairs, and newborn resuscitation.
  • Conducts postpartum visits to evaluate the mother and baby's condition, and instructs the mother on recuperative procedures and baby care.
  • Participates in the informal training of nurses and students, and refresher programs for nurse-midwives.
  • Provides gynecological care to healthy women, including pelvic examinations for cancer screening and referral to physicians for abnormalities.
  • Provides direct family planning services, such as fitting diaphragms and intrauterine devices, and dispensing oral contraceptives.
  • Counsels patients and provides referrals regarding family planning.
