About The Position

Involved in ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and / or provision of patient care delivery in assigned nursing unit(s) or area(s). Promotes an environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. Accountable for the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of patient care. Consults and collaborates with other health care professionals to coordinate the management of patient care. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, students and others. Must be competent to scrub and circulate in most cases, and act as a charge nurse when necessary. Manages nursing and administrative operations in specific patient care areas. Implements changes to patient workflows and operational processes. Maintains 24-hour line management responsibility for the administration of fiscal, material and human resources. Direct reports are typically supervisor level.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in an academic medical center as a circulating and scrub nurse.
  • Demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services.
  • Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, critical events and ability to problem solve with critical thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making.
  • Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines.
  • Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Bachelors or Master's Degree in Nursing required.
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS Certification.
  • Current CNOR.

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or relevant area preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and monitors the patient care delivery system to assure quality care, and compliance with internal policy, external regulations and accepted practices across the continuum of care.
  • Partners with managers across services (e.g., outpatient, children's, cancer center, etc.) to implement policies and procedures for coordination of care for all patient populations.
  • Represents the department / unit on interdisciplinary committees on a range of patient care topics, such as patient satisfaction levels, workforce quality improvement initiatives, workflow efficiencies and clinical information systems.
  • Provides mentorship / leadership to new and emerging nurse leaders to smooth the transition from clinical roles to formal leadership roles.
  • Educates on the business side of healthcare, while maintaining the care side.
  • Reviews and approves individual leadership development plans and assists with identifying resources.
  • Manages a unit in a cost-effective manner, consistent with the financial goals of the organization.
  • Plans and is accountable for the annual operating and capital budget for areas of responsibility.
  • Develops staff in collaborative decision making and shared governance.
  • Creates an environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and the exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes.
  • Responsible for employee recruitment, performance evaluation, progressive discipline, and staff development.
  • Develops a strong culture of teamwork to ensure the quality of daily operations, effective interdepartmental collaborations, and the timely achievement of objectives.
  • Works with clinical educators and leadership to evaluate core competencies in nursing care for the unit.
  • Works with IT managers to plan and implement new or improved patient care information systems.
  • Determines staffing needs and plans.
  • Monitors performance of nursing units and nursing services.
  • Coordinates activities with other units and departments regarding patient care.
  • Works collaboratively with labor relations on bargaining unit issues and contract negotiations at the local level.
  • Facilitates and oversees resolution of human resources, labor relations, employee safety and risk management issues.
